De restriction
Please don't shoot me down for this one...
There may be post hiding but I can't seem to get a straight answer to the question on derestriction as by the guide available from the Docs section.
It states to use 2K resistors one on the CDI and one on the speedo plug. So questions...
1) what W (watts) do I buy the resistors in?
2) does the speedo resistor mean the dial will just represent MPH or is a mechanical converter needed also? It seems to be a one or the other but wanted to check.
3) will the two resistors combined give me the same as a gold stickered CDI box would or is there more to it than that?
I'm later looking to do the HRC mapped CDI and so ideally like the idea that I can fully deristrict the bike for a few pence and some time and then spend on the HRC unit later.
Any help would be great at this point folks.
Cheers
Matt

Re: De restriction
The resistors have nothing to do with the MPH/KPH. If you fit a mechanical converter, your speedo will read in miles and your odometer will count in miles (from the point you fit the converter, so note the last KM figure before you fit it), but the side effect is that your restriction point will move to somewhere around 130mph. So, do you still need a de-restrictor?
[EDIT: Just noticed this wasn't about an NC30 restriction, so it might be complete bollocks. Sorry!]
Ciao,

Re: De restriction
Living just 10mins from Donnington track and with the idea of spending many an afternoon there then yes I still want to de restrict it fully...
So I need to get a mechanical converter that will sort the speedo and odo, perfect.
The CDI restriction is then then two resistors so what sort of Watts do I need to buy them in?
Also will the two resistors basically give me a 'home-made' gold stickered CDI?
Cheers for the speedy response.

Re: De restriction
If you use one of those speedo converters you should be basically de-restricted for road use but I know some seem to recommend also a earlier cdi from what I have read. I don't know having a later model but my bike revs upto the red line no problem using the later standard cdi and speedo converter. Maybe it's different for racing and you need the extra revs, don't know really. Sorry I can't be more helpful.

Re: De restriction
easiest way to deristrict a 23 is the gold label CDI.

Re: De restriction
Thanks for the replies...
Yeah I know the mechanical converter is easy I just want to go the most original looking route. I have to do some wiring work anyway as the loom has seen the 28yrs take its toll so I was thinking while in with the solder and heat shrink the resistor mod would save me over the gold CDI which long term will be replaced by a HRC mapped one anyway. so then money could be better spent at the mo. Maybe some nc29 wheels perhaps. Either way I've a lot to sort initially so the resistor mod, speedo face replacement to read MPH and disc out the speedo seemed to get me the same as mechanical converter and gold CDI.
The aim is this...
Don't mind difficult, do mind cost (I'm originally from Yorkshire
).
Want full power from the bike
Want the speedo to read MPH without the mechanical converter.
Accept the odometer will still read KMs
So looks like I need to resistor Mod, speedo disk out and clock face changed.
Will that give me the result I want?
What watt resistors do I need to for resistor mod job?
Sorry to be so particular, I appreciate there are easier options but nothing ever improves by taking the easy route for me.
Cheers again for all the help so far.

should explain everything you need. You only need to add one one resistor either at the speedo end of the CDI.
All this mod does is remove the restriction (cuts power to the coils) to prevent you from exceeding 112mph (according to the speedo). It won't turn a blue CDI into a gold one. I believe the advance curve is different between the blue & gold CDI's but not really played around. To be honest, I doubt you would notice the difference between the 2 CDI's on a road bike.

Re: De restriction
Cheers CB1pod70,
Thats the guide I'm working to for the derestriction but it just says 2K resistors, no mention of Watts which is where I'm coming unstuck. I know metal film are a bit more efficient but don't have a base figure to go from.
The ultimate is the ignitech unit with HRC maps at some point in the near future so the resistor mod is going to be the way forward for now to get a handle on what the base of the bike is and then see where the road takes me.
If anyone knows the Watts to get the resistors in or even a best guess that would be amazing.
Cheers all
