To cool or not to cool?

Post by BillingCBR »

Hiya,

Just want to know whether you guys think it's worth fitting my HRC Oil cooler to my NC35 engine before I fit it into the NC30 chassis, or leave it for the planned 450cc lump?

Any opinions or advice on fitting it would be appreciated, I realise I won't be able to have a rad fan, even with the short filter, but don't often stop until I get to where I'm going, and if I do I turn the engine off.

it's swings and roundabouts mate.

i have one fitted, as you know, and if the rads are nice and clean the bike will run cooler with no rad fan and the oil passing through the heat exchanger BUT once you stop the extra heat from a warm motor heats the coolant up and temps do rise quickly, but once your off riding again the come down until the next set of lights....

plus if your following traffic at anything less than, say 30mph, the rads dont cool the oil and temps can rise slowly.

so on my topic i said it would be a good mod for a track/race bike but for the road it's just carpark kudos.....

and i was chatting to graeme france about his race bike ( see his facebook build) as it's got one, so i rang him and he said if the bikes got big radtec rads it's not needed for U.K. weather but they do work very well and as he does a few track days in warmer weather ( cant remember were he said) every bit of cooling helps and these do work well.

what are your thoughts?
It's not having what you want but wanting what you've got....Loud ,Proud and Modified ....

I have a mongrel UK spec 30 engine with 35 gearbox, heads and cams. I run no fan and have the uk oil cooler, the temp gets up when standing (but will take probably 10 mins from cold to get to hot) but when running it stays at about 1/4 on the temp gauge. As royster said if it's for the track then go for it, if it's for the road i think it may pee you off after a while.

It's a road bike mate :)

I think it'll be one of those things that helps give an extra inch or 2 (or 3, it IS a HRC part!) when willy waving about the bike, but probably not a massive gain. I like the idea of having it on the bike as it'll be something a bit different.

I was toying with fitting an NC24 oil pump and lower crank case to my blown motor and having a similar setup to the UK NC30. That would obviously come after fixing the blown bottom end, looking at some new rods, bearings and 450 piston kit, so would probably be closer to a race engine.

I think to be honest the worst I can do is fit it, and if it annoys me I can take it off and either keep it for when I have the money for a big power motor, or sell it (who went for the 'Sell it to me!' option  )

So if im reading this right if you fit a oil cooler that has its own rad it will be a better option for the road?

Think you got it in one :) Will see how it goes with the oil/water, then if I get pissed off add oil/air to my next engine :P

Good point, and I'll happily do it, if you finance it ;)

Would like an air/oil setup, but will see how the water/oil setup goes now.

Who are the 2 of you that want it? I'm curious to know if it's one of those 'OMGZ HRC STUFFS!' that people only want because it's HRC?

There must be some merit in having a water/oil cooler setup, honda fitted them from the factory to the NC29 and a few cbr600 models.

The standard ageing nc30/35 cooling system can do with all the help it can get I reckon, although I don't think an oil cooler is a better subtitute than bigger radiators, it does cost less though!

Tou've got the gear so get it whacked on.

I am personally a fan or oil/air cooling and have the Mocal plate for sucha puropse. Fits the same as the water cooler but does not heat up the water..so in those terms it must be better!

Only if you have big rads and reject the extra oil heat can I see the oil/water cooler being useful.

Ref Cammo's point about other bikes having them - they may have been designed with additional cooling capacity in their main rads and so can take the heat from the oil. NC30/35s are probably close to the edge for cooling as it stands.

So, yes, fit it..but get an air/oil one for your bigger motor.
