speaking of which, just found this on the web, it's a 800 but has the same problemss and layout. it's a rayjay charger bel driven from crank with home made kit alloy plenum chamber ect..

Yeah i've seen this before. Its a nice conversion and worth doin on the 800 just don't think theirs much point on the 400 because of all the parts that would need replacing

hmm, there are a couple of superchargers fit for a 400 and one specifically for 400cc, it's stated that they can push a good 40 or more hp through, and that there better than turbo injection ect mostly, but i'm sceptical. i'm more in favour of turbocharging as it's stated by my authority that its offfers more power economically and is a lighter setup, but not less complicated ! pretty much the sama as far as i can see... nitrous on the otherhand seems rather tempting at the mo !

Its a very expensive thing and doesnt last long per bottle. I've seen the guy's bikes he used to have and were well nice.

try getting in touch with tts performance, they use rotrex superchargers for their conversions, there's bound to be one thats suitable. as for the space question, and the internals, if you wanna do it then you'll damnsure find a way

Greetings all.
My first post here. I see this is an old thread, but anyway. From all the research I have done, this being a pet idea of mine, a Rotrex C15-16 (which is really a crank driven turbo), setup to push through the standard carbs, seems viable. The A&A Performance version, mentioned in previous posts, is a fine example of an installation on a VFR800, sans the carb issue of course. Will the 400 crank and rods hold up to the 100hp? Well that is open to debate and there are plenty of people who are more informed than me. The installation does not seem difficult, but heat may be a problem. On the topic of costs I think the 400s are so highly developed that there seems to be no cheap and easy horsepower. Trying to squeeze better flow numbers out of the head or trusting anyone with a stroker crank would give me an aneurysm. In contrast, the Rotrex seems cheap and easy to me. Of course it begs the question, why would anyone do this? Why not just buy a 600? Because I love building performance engines. For me it is the journey, not the destination. I am living in Thailand so just finding a good 400 to start with is a nightmare. Once I get my first 400 I shall post again. If anybody wants to discuss this dead subject in detail then I would be happy to exchange ideas.

Not a chance. Mike Norman is the only person I know to get close to 100hp out of these engines, best to ask him how many rods and cranks he went through before using custom built parts.maelstrom wrote:Will the 400 crank and rods hold up to the 100hp? Well that is open to debate

Thats becuase he has a 1000cc bike producing 150+hp and you have a 20 year old 400 producing < 60.
It's like asking how can I make my vauxhall nova keep up with a mclaren f1.
the bikes arn't made for top-speed.. their circa 130mph is very respectable for a 400cc engine! If you need to go any faster than that a bigger bike is the easiest way.
Super mega ultra turbo chargers are never going to make it go 180+ mph like the zx10r unless you have millions of pounds to redevelop all of the engines internals and add some fancy fuel injection system to it.
