How hot does your reg/rec get?
Greetings people, I have been resealing my genny cover and sorting the gsxr rotor stuff. Got it sorted, seems oil tight now
Anyways, I was warming the bike up and was felt the heat from the reg/rec as I was leaning over the bike. It was bloody hot to touch. Wet finger would just about sizzle on the cooling fins. The wire feeding it was very warm too. This is a replacement finned electrex one from 2 years ago - my original went pop due to knackered windings.
So....I have never felt how hot my reg rec goes before...are they always as hot as this and we don't notice?
Who knows how hot it is supposed to be? Go and start your bike after a couple of minutes - how hot is your reg rec?

My R6 regs get toasty but not hot.
These things are BIG, probably twice the surface area of a finned honda unit.
@ Spike: I'd be changing that thing or carrying a spare mate! Those things go pop at the most odd times.

Cheers guys, sounds like hot is normal.
I'll sticka pic up of it - it is not small by any stretch...but it could griddle some cow quite nicely..

i wouldn't worry about it,so long as the charge rates are all hunky dory then it's doing it's job well enough.

Re: How hot does your reg/rec get?
I run a special rec/reg that is handmade by a guy here in Denmark, we did a bench test on it which showed it would go up to 79 degrees celcius and there was a voltage drop of 0.05v compared to cold. So a oem (that work after another principle) will get very hot is no shock.

Re: How hot does your reg/rec get?
been burnt by my one too... although ive seen somewhere that you can attach a CPU cooler to it, the fan is just the right size- doesnt do an amazing job of keeping it cool, but if i remember right i think it was about a 12 to 15 degree decrease...
