I think its 6.8mm from the sealing face to the float outer surface. The position of the float itself is important when measuring this. It is seated but not compressing the little piston that it rests on. If you have a Haynes manual look in there. It is alot clearer and more accurate than my gumph.

Cheers!!
Tricky little thing to do but i did it....only 1 out of the 4 carbs was set correctly....all the others were between 7.5 and 8mm. Meaning the chambers didnt have enough fuel in....would that explain why it wouldnt rev past 12k revs??
The smell of petrol must be coming from some where else then as the carbs were obviously not over filling.... hhmmmmmm.....

Cheers fumb and everyone elses for your help!

i have now put my carbs back on and it starts on all 4 cylinders at the same time now (instead of 2) no problemo:D

...slight problem tho....i should have checked before i put the carb back on the bike that the float chamber gaskets were sealing properly...one or 2 leak and the whole lot needs to come back off!!

So I need a new set of float chamber gaskets...anybody got ideas where i can get them from and how much???

Rick Oliver is a bit of an NC30 guru. I don't know him personally, only from on here.

He can be contacted through here, if you do a search you will be able to find his email and number i think.

Well had a bit of trouble gettin in touch with him but no worries anyways.
I got some very thin gasket material (almost like paper) and cut my own gaskets, i put them in place on top of the old o'rings with a thin smeer of gasket sealant around the edge. Put them back on and bolted them back up and they work a treat :D

It now fires on all 4 cylinders straight away (before only 2 then other 2 kicked in) and flies up to the red line now (would only rev to 12k before). And as an added bonus the bike doesnt stink of petrol now cause that leaks sorted.

Just shows what a difference setting your floats up makes...its like a new bike now...rapid ;) :D

Cheers for everyones help!!

to be honest mate best thing with floats is to leave them well alone the slightest deviation from what is right will cause many undesirable problems.

The first thing to do is to remove all bowls take a high presure air line and blast everything out putting the air line down the fuel inlet is fine if you have any spray some carb cleaner before. Next thing to do isreome one at a time the float needle blow down that with air line should come freely out of fuel inlet. fit the floats making sure float needles are sat in correct part of holer. then stick em back together and stuff them in, For your floats not to be letting fuel in a single float bowl the needle will be masivly set wrong you will see that by eye when doing the clean out.

Best option is the fact there are more carbs left in the country than working engines for these go buy a set for penuts off ebay and stick them straight on if you are in any doubts of your carbs rplacing parts in them will cost you more than buying a few second hand sets complete.

I can see where your coming from Chris, but how do you know that the second hand set are ok? They could be in even more of a state that the original set. When you overhaul your own carbs, you know for definate that everything is set correctly and there are no blockages. As long as your methodical and follow the correct instructions (haynes) then i can't see too many people ruining their carbs.

As a quick fix and if your carbs are totally shot at then maybe gambling on a second hand set may work for some people.

Different folks, different strokes and all.

Sam: If your ever need to remove your carbs again, i would recommend that your get some proper o-rings for the float bowls. I managed to get some off Rick. At £5 for four it is well worth it.
