hey guys (and girls)!

Ive got a 1989 nc30 and having some trouble with the carbs. when it starts it starts on 2 cylinders then i need to rev it a bit for the other two to kick in. Also it wont rev past 12k revs (red lines at 14500) it starts stuttering. im presuming the carbs need setting up on it as it stinks of petrol when i stop and the over flow pipes look damp!

is it an easy enough job to set them up?
i have a workshop manual but dont want to open a tin of worms my self if its better to get a specialist to so it.

any help appreciated!

Give them a strip down and clean would be my first suggestion. And check the spark plugs. This might clear your problems right up. Is it 33hp restricted? Coz mine used to start on 2 sometimes when it had the washers in.

I'll warn you now... the o-rings you should replace when stripping and cleaning your carbs sot £76 from Honda. The only place i have found that does it cheaper is Rick Oliver. He supplies the float bowl o-ring. I have no idea where to source the drain screw o-rings. As you can tell i'm in the process of cleaning my carbs too. But i'm damned if i'm paying £19 per carb for the seals.

Fumb - What do the seals that you have taken out look like? Basically asking could you use them again or you still looking round for a cheaper set?.. Just so i bear it in mind if i ever get round to strip cleaning mine lol.

The seals looked pretty compact and hard. I would not be confident re-using them again. I assume they are the bikes originals (16 years old) so the nice soft flexible properties aren't there any more. The drain screws o-rings look ok so i'm hoping to get away with just changing the float bowl o-rings.

I'd personally leave the drain screws in and not risk disturbing them. If nothing else I've had them rust and the tips fall apart on other Honda's of similar age. I don't know about the NC30's but you can't get drain screws for the MC17. :(

I always use a bit of gasket sealent around the float bowls, and always keep the float bowls numbered, as the surfaces will mate back together better.

I've only ever had one leak, because I put it back on the wrong carb.

I have removed the drain screws when i was cleaning the float bowls and they where in very good nick. This is from a 1992 bike. I don't know if they had been replaced but they looked original and never been fettled.

When i removed the float bowls they has some gasket sealant around the sealing faces. Is this standard Honda practise?

Well i am not going to strip my whole carbs down but i need to set the floats. i have taken the carbs off now.
when i drained the petrol out of the float chambers in 2 of the carbs there was no petrol at all, one had a slight bit in and one was full. (bike stunk of petrol after a ride so the full carb may have been over filling!!)

Does that mean that all of the floats are set up wrong and completely different from each other.....surely the same amount of petrol should drain out of each???

Does anybody know what setting the floats should be set at?
