not likely based on the symptomsrichyrd5 wrote:Or valve guide seals(plenty of those!!)
If the bores too worn you might be replacing a lot more... but the only motor ive had to rebuild was fine with just a set of rings, I didn't repalce the shells either as they were all withing acceptable tolerances and didn't show any signs of damage.vfrman wrote:I'm betting on rings. I just don't want to tear it down and not have new shells...I mean, if I'm in the motor, might as well replace those, right?
Don't want to teach you how to suck eggs but have you compression tested it (wet and dry) see how its looking yet?
As for replacing shells bit of a judgement / budget / personal preference call.. I'd inspect them and measure them at least to make sure they fall within limits. Personally I would only replace them if I could see some signs of wearing on the shells / out of tolerance / other damage.
I've seem some people who have replaced all the valve stem seals / shells as part of a full refurb without checked them.

I got weird measurements when I did the compression test. I'm thinking my adapter isn't quite up to the job. They were all pretty similar from jug to jug, but they were also about half of what they should have been.
