Oil Cooler Mod - any success?

Post by RoninZX-10R »

Because my bike runs fairly hot during the races early on in our season (we start in February, probably the hottest time of year) I was considering installing an oil cooler from a CBR600F4i (haven't had any luck finding an NC23 oil cooler). There seems to be plenty of them for sale in the states.

Has anyone completed this mod and was there any noticable drop in temperature? Also, what oil filter needs to be used due to the restricted space? What orientation should the oil cooler spigots point when all tightened up?

Cheers. I've checked out that website a few times, good information on there.

I was hoping to hear from anyone else who's done the mod and whether they think the effort is worth it.

I tried it and junked it as the problem you have is the unions you have to tap into the water pump cover interfere with the fairings once you have the pipes on. It would be okay if the unions were at right angles like the hrc ones but we could only managed to get straight ones. It would maybe be ok on a race bike but in all honesty I think an additional oil cooler rad is a better option

I've done it,

viewtopic.php?t=2894

Like tony has said, the angle of the nipples is a problem but what you end up doing is pumping heat from the oil into the cooling system so unless your rads are are top notch and clean/new you just make temps higher as old rads can't cool the extra heat.
I did it on a road bike, as you'll see in the thread, and I had to loose the rad fan. No problem on the track but not great on the road.
Under 30mph the bike didn't cool down.

Bloody hell! 250 quid? I'd rather let the bike get hot rather than pay that much!!

After a bit more research it looks like an air/oil cooler may be the way to go as my radiators (new Chinese high quality crap!) wouldn't be able to handle any extra heat.

Has anyone fitted an air/oil cooler to their NC's? I'd be able to mount it under the instrument bracket easily enough, but does anyone know what type of fittings and hoses are required? Also, I haven't been able to find any photos showing where the hoses connect to the engine?

I used to run this large rad, side mounted, and it did make a difference. The MOCAL sandwich plate was simple to fit, I got some fittings and some hose from my local Pirtek and the job was jobbed. Use a half height oil filter - same as an FZ6 Yamaha and it was as simple as that.

@ Ronin - Can get you some pics if you want - you can buy them for under a hundred quid and get it sorted for the price of some fittings and some hose. I might flog mine - has not been fitted for a couple of years (since I had to swap motors and I never refitted it)
