Re: oil coolers on nc30's
well i'm back from my late run, went out to get this for a photo comp

but anyway,it's cold enough to see your breath but not cold enough to freeze fingers when out riding ,if you follow me.
the bike took a while to get to 70* and pretty much sat there but i was going around 60mph...and i still have no bodywork on.....like i siad before cheating
i slowed to around 40mph and entered a more residential area where the heat got up to around 80* and stayed there, which i will be over the moon about if thats the way it satys when i have bodywork back on,and a lower fan of any sort to keep the beast from blowin will be the cherry on the cake
all in all i am very happy with my late night run and i hope to take it into traffic on saturday to see how quick i can heat it up

Re: oil coolers on nc30's
yeah mark i must admit i was a little light headed from the rush of blood into my member but after 2 days this calmed down and all is right in the world again
no comparsion pictures yet but to be honest the main difference is the two pipes come out side by side rather than one facing out and one turning 90*
the new shorter MKII barb arrived and has been fitted and seems to have cleared the bodywork so once the bike comes back from getting new headbearings fitted (saturday) i'll get the bodywork on and get it a run up and down the road to see how it works with panels fitted,to be honest apart from finding a fan to fit i don't think they is much more for the thread, thanks for the help guys

Re: oil coolers on nc30's
well here's the last images i'll put up of the oil cooler and piping fitted, once the bike is road worthy again i'll come back and tell you how it goes with the fairings on but if it's anything like it is now without the fairings i'll be very very impressed.
from the out side it looks the same as every other VFR

looking down near the water pump cover you can see the MKII barb and how the pipe may rest against the inside of the bodywork it's not kinked in any way.

with the fairings off you can see the pipes and cooler in all it's glory

the pipe looping over the engine cover was only done because the CBR900 heat exchanger used had one pipe facing straight out and the other coming out before bending 90*,as seen here on this picture.

i'm sure there are other honda heat exchangers out there that have the inlet and outlets side by side or closer together but to be honest as long as it works i wasn't that fussed that the pipe looped over the cover.

the pipes out of the water pump cover may look as if they loop out and may cause issues fitting bodywork but i've tried to show in these pictures it's more a trick of the eye and it does stick out further than the engine cover itself.

so here it is fitted and working,as i said i'll get the new headbearings fitted friday and the bike back saturday morning, the panels fitted then a run about with the panels on to see how it'll work and how hot it'll get with these on
i will continue to look for a small fan to fit to the bottom rad incase traffic gets heavy and the bike sits for a long time slowly heating up but i'll see how quickly it heats and how bad the problem is before i search for the fan.
i hope this is of some use to someone on the forum and if anybody decides to fit this to their bike and are looking any help drop me a mail and i'll tell you what i did to get this far

Re: oil coolers on nc30's
just to come back and update this further ,
i have spent a few days now riding around with the coole on and standard panels on and it's a bit of a win/lose story. if you get out and run the bike,no stops ( or very little ones) with mainly an open road ahead of you, even with my shit covered bottom rad i was seeing around 85/90*, but once i started getting caught up behind traffic is slowly creaps up to 100*.
last week i got stuck in traffic at some road works, outta them and in behind more traffic lights, slowly it crept up to nearly on the red, once moving it wasn't coming down and i put this down to the fact traffic was doing below 30mph,once i got over 30mphhthe temps came down, once one stage i was thinking of just shuting it down and letting it cool for 5mins.
so it's sort of a win/lose here, win if you can keep moving over 30mph and lose if you stop or slow down below 30mph

Re: oil coolers on nc30's
So you are saying that it kind of averages out or does it provide lower temps over a days worth of riding?
Would a larger cleaner lower rad, help?
Air/oil is the way forwards I reckon

Re: oil coolers on nc30's
oil/air is probably the way forward for a road bike yes but i think there might be something with this for track/race bikes.
overall when the bike was moving and up the rev range the temps where low and performance was good ,maybe a bigger/cleaner rad might help cool at lower speeds and maybe a bigger rad would cool better as it has a bigger contact surface for the air to cool the liquid in the rad, this is something i'd like to look into but not right now as i'm broke after getting the bike back on the road after my spill.
