You only need to shim up if you skim the heads.

Take advice from an engine tuner conversant with these engines before carrying out this work.

The spring loaded cam drive gears are not quietening gears, but anti backlash gears designed to eliminate the resonance that hammers the cams, followers and valves. [and maintain accurate valve timing]
Some tuners of short circuit engines remove them, but often those working on endurance race motors do not.

It may not be a good long term idea, depending on your power/cost/reliability point of view.

Any more thoughts on this?

I'm leaving my bike in on monday to get my valve clearances done. I was going to get him to take these gears out when the cams are out.

Now i'm not so sure after reading the last post.

Depends on what your using the bike for.

The cams dont need to come out to do the valve clearences by the way.

My brothers RC30 has all the quitening gears removed from cams and cam drives and is beaten to death everytime he rides it on road and track and has never missed a beat yet. If I'm right that was something like 8 years ago that was done and is used every year. If it's a bike you use on a daily basis not sure if it's something I would do but mines a weekend and the odd track day bike so mine are coming out.

Mine will only be on track.

I checked the valve clearances 2 years ago, only done 2 trackdays since and they where just out of spec. I know it needs re shimmed so was thinking the cams would have to come out??
Its been so long i cant really remember.

if it is a track bike, then do it..why not. Also go total loss - that makes far more a difference.

just take the gears out..... me and my mate have both ran nc's on the road without any quitening gears sounds like a skelton tap dancing in a steel bin but i love the sound propa. reminds me of the old factory bikes
just make sure you make yourself a little spacer to to fit were the quitening gear used to be as the gear can slide down the shaft which aint good.
also quitening gear/back lash elimators are both the same thing as the gears are straight cut they designed to take the play out of the gears thats why once removed they loud as war.
hope this helps

It was a popular thing on the CBR250's back in the day.

Not sure it makes a great deal of difference, especially on an NC30.. HRC kit manual doesn't specify it either (perhaps going on arsey30's post!?)

It will make it sound knackered / has a dry clutch fitted at idle, which might hurt your chances if you come to resell it.

Unless your aiming for a totally stipped down track-bike (total loss / light flywheel etc) I wouldn't really bother with it, but if you do, post back if you ever get any cam-wear!

Back to back dyno's would be interesting.

I will be doing it but not as soon as I had hoped as I'm running out of time with the bike.
