It was Graeme who told me 39T rears are the only option for the NC29.

Sadly the fireblade carrier won't work, it's significantly bigger than the 400's.
Whilst looking at the wheel I was reminded that the 39 I have is as good as new, and that I'm already going to be pushing whether the chain is long enough. Will leave it as-is for now, if I ever feel the need to change gearing I might look into using spacers or 12mm studs. Would there be any harm in using 12mm bolts, if you used a locking agent?

Would dropping the front to a 14t be of any use, i know you can get that in a 525.

I imagine 12mm bolts would be fine but you will need to drill and tap the carrier. Also check that the bolt heads have enough clearance from the swingarm, although I can't see them sticking out more than the standard nuts.
Alternatively, if you're willing to experiment:
The CBR600F2 (M to R, '91 to '94) uses a 4.5" rear wheel which appears identical to the NC29 rear wheel - they may well be the same part. According to JT Sprockets, this model CBR600 also uses rear sprockets with mounting holes of 12.5mm diameter. So...... there's a chance that a sprocket carrier from this model CBR600 will fit the NC29 rear, and if so it should accept the CBR900 sprocket perfectly.
Note that according to JT Sprockets the American F2 uses 530 pitch; FM to FR is listed differently but pitch isn't specified. Therefore don't buy these sprockets - you need one from a CBR919 (T to X, '96 to '99 - that's a point, what model is your CBR900 wheel from?), although there appears to be a few other bikes that use the same (some of the CB600s for example). Just check for 525 pitch, 138mm diameter of mounting hole arrangement, 12.5mm mounting hole diameter (or obviously 10.5mm if another exists - I haven't found one). If you use the NC29 carrier, I found I had to file it down a bit because the CBR900 sprocket centre hole is 112mm diameter compared to the NC29s 118mm (I also mounted the sprocket 'upside-down'). This is to maintain correct sprocket alignment.
Hope that helps. As Chris says you could go down on the front. It appears NC29 and NC23 fronts are the same - if so I have a spare going.
