FZR400 4DX/3TJ Fork and Shock Swap?!?!?

Post by Bickers2208 »

I have been reading the threads about upgrading the internal springs on the stock forks, and plenty of other topics to get my eBay finger twitching...

I am looking to swap the shock and forks with adjustable items front and rear.

I was wondering if there are any simple(ish) fork swap options for something with some adjustment?

I have read here that the R6 shock can be fitted, but are there any adjustable shocks that are the same length and dont require someone to fabricate new links?

Or is there anyone out there that is making the conversition kits/plate for the late R6 shocks into the FZ's?

Welcome to the fourm 8-)

The 3tj is quite short at the head stock so as far as forks go your kind of stuck with what you have. There are SP version forks that will bolt straight in ... but they're not that common. Some members have moded other fork lowers to fit the 3TJ stanchions and others have fitted different front ends completely but if your just runnibf a road bike then you can good results by changing the springs and oil.

The later R6 shock with a red spring works with an extension piece fitted to the bottom the shock was originally used because they were cheap and plentiful - racers just changed them, but they may benefit fro changing the spring.
There was a thread with a link to another (US based) forum where somebody was using a later GSX-R shock because it was longer. This shock left the bike about 10-20mm lower at the back, (that's based on my memory which has quite wide tollerances these days), and they used an adjustable ride height mod with it.
My bike uses an EMC shock, it's direct replacement and they cost arround £350. It's steel bodied so it's a bit heavier than posh race item but it's good and also has high / low speed damping. It's not that much more expensive once you start adding everthing up.

I'd have a chat to Manxton, you might even find it easier to send them the forks and let them rebuild them with their springs and oil .... I'm not sure where you are relative to them but you could negotiate a setup as part o the deal.
I had my forks rebuilt by RaceLab - it took a while because they needed to find new stanchoins for SP forks, but if your closer to Bournemouth it might be easier.

I'd get the shock and forks done first then have the bike set up.

Hiya,

I can make you an adapter to fit a (red spring) R6 shock into a 3TJ. I've got the material in stock and can turn it round in a morning.

No, you need one of these-

with the clevis at the bottom end.

I'm in Peterlee, my postcode is SR8.

There's no need to be local, I know exactly what to do ;) Where are you?
