Hi Ian,

I replaced my clutch plates over the weekend and encountered a similar problem - I stripped it apart again and got out the manual and must've done something wrong, i'm thinking that I put a plate in and it was at an angle in the basket.

To get it sorted I took all the plates out and removed the inner part of the clutch (the bit that sits in the centre of the plates, can't remember what it's called) and got out the Haynes. It advised to start building up the plates so that you've put in four friction plates and three clutch plates (don't hold me on that, but I think that's what it was) and then put in the centre piece, before building up the rest of the plates and putting the end piece on the pushrod and refitting the outer plate and pressure plate. When I put the circlip back on it still didn't locate into the lip, presumably because the clutch assembly was more built up with the newer, thicker friction plates. I'd say there was 2mm to go before it would go in properly. I got the end of an allen key and gently tapped the circlip, so the pressure plate moved enough for the circlip to expand into the lip. I did this at a few points all the way around and it fitted back in as it was meant to. Once it was in there was feel at the lever and the clutch worked fine.

My clutch is all out at the moment.....My plain plates are very blued and im gonna replace them....Hopefully that solves the problem....I've bought friction plates twice and they have been damaged. Its ended up costing £200 to replace a few clutch plates.

Ok i recieved the steel plates from rick O today....I put them all in with my new friction plates and its still the same thing....i noticed when you look inside the pressure plate that sits on the outside , The gap where the pressure plate lifter sits in is really big and when you put the circip in theres a 3-5mm gap which is why the clutch lever just pulls on the way in with no clutch feeling.

so the next test i assembled the clutch with No friction plates or steel plates...put it all back together and its perfect theres no 3-5mm gap and the circlip is perfect....clutch has got feeling again.......Im guessing it has to be my friction plates.

One thing i didnt do properly was i only soaked the plates for 2 hours before fitting them ....could that be a big problem ?

I really need help with this asap i missed the southend shakedown last year and dont want to this year

Thanks

How many friction plates, and how many plain plates are you fitting? I don't know why but I think I remember reading somewhere once that some engines have nine friction plates whereas some have eight. Don't quote me on that though! 3-5mm does sound like a plate of each type thick, if you see what I mean...

Soaking the friction plates will not make them swell up, so short answer is No.
