Speedlimiter, CDI unit, too small carbs, all designed for the Jap power limits.Wozza wrote:In what way is power restricted?

It's not just me who thinks the 400s have stood still for the last 24 years, http://hondacbr.netfirms.com/specs.htm" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; sad but true, an Aprilia 250 would blow any 400 away.

Re: NC23 Aero and NC23RR - same under the skin?
Wrong.
The restriction came in in 1989 when Japan decided to restrict all Vehicals to 112mph inc cars.
The Tri RRj was 1988 so full power.
getting any 400 to full power is only £25 at the most or free if you want to dis-assemble the clocks. Most 400's have been derestrcted anyhow.
You want to use an aero, it's your funeral and purse, if anything goes wrong.
You will want to beef the suspension and we KNOW that the Tri and Gull can be done properly easy enough.
Most 400's standard power is 59bhp. My tri will get cose to 145 eventually on standard gearing but its had a lot thrown at it. It can run next to without slipstreaming, an early CBR600 if you can find a straight long enough. I ran mine on an airfield whiuch had it on the limiter in top gear. Mind has had a fortune flung at it over the past 14 years, which explains the top speed.
The RS250 is immensly more flickable and can be tuned for silly speeds but I guess if you weant to be constantly engine stripping and rebuilding, using gallons of top quality 2 stroke oil, then off you go. There's more of an art to riding one of them fast than a 400 as they are so peaky.
FTM just go on to Wikipedia and read the crap on there. Most of that is wrong.
Having 3 tris, 1 gull, an RVF, a cbr4/600 conversion done by myself properly, and owned an FZR4sp and a couple of NC30, I can garantee in standard the 400's as a ready to go bike in normal road use in standard settings are better than the RS but when you go to track, maybe the RS has the edge for tuning.
The aero doesn't even rate as an ok bike unless you get one that doesnt need anything. Even tyres are a problem

Re: NC23 Aero and NC23RR - same under the skin?
I don't know about cars but 400cc bikes had a manufacturers voluntary 59ps limit from 86-88 and most jap bikes were quoted at 59ps even if that wasn't the true power output. In 88 the 59ps limit was made law and no japanese home market bikes made more than that but official British market VFR's made about 63-65ps. In the 90's the limit was dropped to 54ps (the same as a 86 VF400F I once had).
I wasn't saying the Aero is a great bike I was just saying it was the fastest and probably the most powerful grey 400.
I had a quick search through Hondas specs and Aero, RRJ and RRK are all quoted as 59ps, dry weight though shows Aero 165kg, RRJ 179kg and RRK 182kg. That could explain why the Aero I had was a lot faster than the RRK I had later.
On a different note, I was looking out for the cbr4/6 on ebay but didn't see it. Any chance of a link to it.

Re: NC23 Aero and NC23RR - same under the skin?
What manufacturers quote and what they are are tottally different usually.
My mate who works a dyno and has dealt with loads of 400's reckons any running 58/59 on HIS dyno are good ones as most turn out 56bhp.
The RVF when it was 1st released was quoted as 54bhp but take 59 which is what the manufaturers quote as being pretty spot on. I would have thought the aero and the NC24 were 59 too. The later bikes though restricted are still 59bhp as the restriction is on the speed and not the power hence 112 mph restricted and full power aprox 130mph, though how many people can actually tell how fast their bike is when its off the speedo and bike speedos tend to show faster plus finding a safe road to get it to the limiter in top. Unlikely unless you have a death wish. Getting it to the limiter in top and all you think of is "poor engine"!!!

I said power. The speedlimiter and the blue CDI provide a defined limit for top speed and revs, not power.FTM wrote:Speedlimiter, CDI unit, too small carbs, all designed for the Jap power limits.Wozza wrote:In what way is power restricted?
As for carbs being too small, that's the first I've heard of that - are you saying I could fit Aero carbs to my Tri-Arm to increase power?
If the Aero is the most powerful and lightest of the 400s, why are 400 racebikes usually NC29s, VFRs, ZXRs etc?

FTM.
Your RRk would have been restricted. Easy to unrestrict.
400's HAVE stood still for years. maybe because they haven't built any for about 14 years and most of those registered later are in fact older models that have been sitting in a warehouse somewhere for years.
I saw a brand new NC30 in Japan in 99 and have had RVF's in 99/00. Those bikes were likely to have been at least 5 years old but unused and unregistered

Re: NC23 Aero and NC23RR - same under the skin?
i still beat the Aero 600 in speed on a 2 mile straight. his topped out at 110, mine kept going.
i can remember the conversation.....
my mate whos lighter than i am phones me and tells me that i will be jealous because he's just bought my favourite Blade..
i asked him which one did he get.. thinking it was the early 900 blade which is my fav.
he says.. Hurricane 600!.. to which i start laughing! he paid £800 for it!! i told him to take it back as the seller saw a sucker! it had loose cams that he never fixed. he couldn't find parts for it, getting tyres was an embarrassing experience due to his stupidity!
the bike sold 3 years later for £200, its true value!
when i get the iPhone, i am going to test out the "speedo" app! lol. its GPS and only ± 2mph. heheheehehe

British market VFR400's made 63-65hp, imports 59hp, that's what I mean by power restricted.Wozza wrote:I said power. Aero carbs are the same size as Tri-Arm ones, different jets though I think.
As for racebikes usually being NC29s, VFRs, ZXRs, newer with more tyre choice.

Have you any proof? I don't believe this. Tuned VFRs with full systems and the like only just make mid 60s.British market VFR400's made 63-65hp, imports 59hp, that's what I mean by power restricted.
