myself and a few of my fellow pbmagforum members are trying to build something special out of a cbr400 nc23 to compete against a modded honda bros 680cc. at the end of the projects the bikes will be pitted against each other for fun, before being sold on ebay to raise money for good causes. we are working to a tight budget, basically taking peoples unwanted parts as donations and either using them or ebaying them to fund parts we can use. now i'm not here on the scrounge, but i've been looking round for ideas on the site.

we are considering the jellymould cbr600 engine swap, although this will mean getting the frame cut and rewelded by the looks of things, which may make it prohibitively expensive.

we would also like to do a complete reworking of forks and rear end. again i understand cbr600 stuff is popular but i'm not sure which combinations of stuff will work and what if any mods need to be made to get them to work. also, are there any other popular mods out there that aren't cbr600? are USD forks possible.... radial brakes.... etc.

basically, we're just fishing for ideas at the moment. we pick the bike up in a couple weeks time and will be wanting to get to work straight away. our competitors have had a massive head start on us!

what can be done with an NC23 ?
feel free to offer advice, post pics, point us towards links. all greatly appreaciated.

here's the bike as it was when we bought it



so we were considering the engine swap, based on a possible engine donation but that didn't come to fruition so its staying as a 400 for now, possibly tune it up later. we concentrated on finding solutions to front and rear suspension, our aim being to get as much adjustment on there as possible and convert to a 17" rear for choice of slick tyres. decided to go with a gullarm rear setup, with a cbr600 shock...



this fits the nc23 nicely, with just a spacer needing machined up for the bottom shock mount. aesthetically, we think it improves the lines of the bike too...

the chain run is only a few mm out at worst, and the swingarm fouls the coolant tank so we'll move/replace that somewhere else.

we recently found a full exhaust system which was in remarkably good condition for its age, this will replace the blown and rotted one that has now been disposed of.

as for front end, we are going with cbr600 forks. we did get a set off ebay but they turned up bent from crash damage, this is still being resolved but looks like the seller is going to cover the cost of having them straightened. we are looking for a 6 spoke front wheel to match the rear... nc30, nc29 or early cbr600.

in fact we have a shopping list, if anyone here has any of these, drop us a pm. don't mind paying sensible money, but if your feeling generous then, it is for charidee and we'll happily take donations :D

gullarm sprocket carrier and cush drive rubbers
gullarm rear brake disk
gullarm or nc30 or cbr600 6 spoke front wheel
chain and sprockets (520)
exhaust gaskets

we will also need some fairings, though we're still undecided as to what stuff to go for. doesn't have to be mint, just need to fit, do its job and not look out of place. one of our number has offered to respray it all in glorious metalflake.

the stuff that has been removed from the bike will be put up for sale at some point, if you'd be interested in anything, pm us though in this instance we'll be looking for as much as we can reasonably expect, to feed funds back into the project. deadline is august 10th when we are hoping to have the bike ready for a trackday at cadwell, we'll give it our best shot, but its going to be tight.

I've tried to give as much advise as I can offer on PB, I can however offer a set of 29 Cush drive rubbers and possibly a sprocket carrier do you have the cbr6 rear wheel yet? I would imagine as long as it's 5.5" you should be good a 160 rear will fit on the 29 with a bit of clearence.

Small correction to the above, the spacer that we had machined for the conversion was the left side spindle bush/spacer. Basically all that is needed to slot a Gullarm into the triarm frame is to machine the triarm left bush down by 4mm. this will leave it standing proud of the left spindle dust seal on the gullarm by about half a mm. The gullarm Itself is wider than the triarm at the spindle by this 4mm, so shaving down the spacer brings i back to the same length. (the triarm spacer is used because it is a basic tube, whereas the gullarm one has a flange on the outside edge).

Then you just slide the bottom bush out of the gullarm linkage (where it bolts to the bottom frame mounting) and replace it with the bush from the equivalent mount on the triarm linkage. slide that into the gullarm linkage. Bolt it in and bob's your uncle. It appears that the chain run may be about 2-3mm out, but we are intending using 520 racing chain & sprockets so can space them accordingly by juggling rear wheel and sprocket spacers.

finally we have a decent set of forks, they are cbr600ft items and the calipers we bought a while back fit them fine. the cbr400 front spindle isn't quite long enough so we'll try and pick up the right one at some point. with the bike back on its wheels we just did a basic bounce test on it and it seems not too bad, although the rear end seems really low which is probably a combination of the smaller rear wheel we now have and the flat tyre. it wont stay on its sidestand at the moment though.

we are still chasing up a few bits and pieces, the deadline is not far away and we run the risk of sailing past it. hopefully if the bits we need arrive by next weekend we can get a bit more done, then i have a week off so i can spend some more time on it tidying it up.
