BANG and the bike is gone!
Out today on the bike at about 12000 rpm in 5th and the engine let go 
Annoying thing is, i have just changed the chain and sprockets (less than 75 miles).
At least it never spat me off!!!
Whats the plan then guys, bike is not worth alot, looks tatty, but has newish discs and pads and a recent service.
Spares or repairs?
New 400 engine?
Or chuck a 600 in to it?
Although a newer bike seems the easiest/logical solution.
Problem is, my mates are on on 600/1000's and i have rung its neck since i've had it
Thought i would share the days event with everyone.

sorry to hear about your not so enjoyable day!!!! 
did you try startng the bike after it happened?is it well and truly fecked?
weigh up your options and go for what works best!!!!!!
buy a engine off ebay.......fit it and away you go!!!you would be able to strip the goosed one down and fix it.and then sell the fixed engine or keep it for back up!!!
break the whole bike and get as much money as you can!!!!downside being time and listing items on here and ebay!
or sell the bike complete,non runner!!!!the quickest and easiest option.......probably wouldn't get that much though.

Unlucky mate, i know how you feel.
There should be a couple of 400cc engines kicking around due to all the Heathens fitting 600cc lumps to their bikes, i'm sure one of them will be selling their old engine.
As for keeping up with your mates on 600/1000cc bikes, buy a 600 or a thou for commuting, touring, racking up the miles etc, and save the FZR for dry Sunday runs and playing with in the garage.
I got a CBR600 last year, higher top speed, easier to ride, more comfortable, not screaming at 60mph, blah blah blah. Very ordinary and unispiring though, everybody seems to have had one at some point.
Not like that with the 3TJ though, everybody has to ask what it is, and they all want a shot.

Fit a 600. More useable power with great 400 handling.
Dont join your 600/1000 mates, leave them behind!

throwing in a 6 sounds the best to me.
Problem is, i'm not exactly a mechanic.
Is it relatively easy? Costs?
Its a 1989 1wg if that makes any difference.
If someone has already completed the change over, can they PM any relevant info i may need.
I take it a fzr600 would be easiest and cheaper than a thundercat lump?

No commuting/touring for me

i take it the frame is better on the 400, as surely it would be cheaper easier just to buy a running 600

There are a lot of variables here.
Firstly it's winter and you could get a good deal on a new bike probably with 0% interest .... as long as your ok with work and insurance.
Second is maybe a secondhand bike .... that means money upfront and you'll probably want something bigger than the 400, so maybe your looking at £2-3k that wuld be the last carb'd R1 again as long as you can get insurance.
You could buy my 3en2 .... it's like yours (but the valves are tight) and has some spares and a lot of nice to have bits.
Lastly - chuck a 600 (3HE) in there. It's fairly easy for that model with no mounting plates. The airbox is the same but will sit higher making the dummy tank tight to fit but you could space it up a tad. You'll need the downpipes and CDI too. You can get by on the 400 clocks but the 600's will be mph and a lower revcounter. You'll be able to sell the 400's downpipes to get a bit back.
