Any other alternatives besides Mikuni Carbs????

Post by adibtanah »

I have been told I can fit another type of carb onto my FZR400. I cannot get the old Mikuni tuned properly.Any suggestions??? Hopefully a less troublesome type of carb!!!

There are two types ... CV carbs witch are used on most FZR400's and the rare Flatside carbs standard on the later SP 3TJ type bikes.

Chances are yours are the CV ones ... if your bike's relatively standard then buy some off ebay clean them and see how the bike runs.

Is you bike modded, what are the syptoms of it running badly ???

It is a 1988 1wg apparently according to the model identifier a 3en1. It has 48000km on the clock. The bike is stock standard. Being in South Africa no restrictions on bike.
It ran fine until I pressure cleaned the bike and got the carbs full of water. Stripped them and cleaned out with compressed air and later carb cleaner etc. Then saw the manifold rubbers were cracked, replaced them and decided to replace plugs, air filter, fuel filter, oil, coolent etc. I then reset air screws 3 1/2 turns and assembled carbs.
I rode it for about 4 months and had a flat spot at 8-9k then wouldn't go more than 11k in 5&6th gear full taps.
Stripped carbs again and found pin holes in 2 diaphragms. Repaired them with sealent for nitrile rubber. Put back together and now will rev to 14k but with a bit of splutter and farting from 11-13k. I know I need to get new needles & jet kit but the bike ran great before with perished manifold rubbers???
Anyhow the carbs are Mikuni 3EN 00 - E8212, Jets 0.88 and 5.25, Needle 5CFZ. I am a perfectionist when it comes to engines, It needs to be right, and I know that the bike can perform better and smoother. Any suggestions?
Thanks

dont pressure wash carbs! :poke:
got water in connectors behind clocks?

have you got a free flowing end can? might explain splutter if theres too much gas going out for the standard carbs to feed fuel/air mix in?
or the other way, too much air in the mix so it cant cope?

Yeah got freeflow can "Matsumoto" or something like that, and had to shorten it by about 10mm because it had rust hole and cut it shorter and re riveted and sealed it. (I had stripped the tank and air filter, then closed carb tops but the pressure cleaner ripped throught the plastic!!!! Wasn't a bright brain day, was hung over!)
