Hiya All,
RE:Touring on a CBR400 - What storage do you fit?
I would love to take the NC29 on tour. What storage have you fitted - that worked?(The Oxford old tank bag and "Ride" Pillion Bag - that fits on the 1996 cbr600- does not fit well on the CBR400! Worse luck!)
1) The Ventura system - does all that tubing add loads offweight onto the Bike?
2) Oxford side panniers - Do they fit the curvy rear end?
3) Do any other side panniers work?
4) Is there a good strap on pillion bag that would fit?
5) Tank Bag - Is there a good bag that would fit? Or is the space available simply too small and restrictive.?
6) Rucksack - an aching no no for touring?!?!!?
7) Security - Do you keep a big fat Chain under the pillion seat?
Hope you can advise on what works best on a NC29!

Hi,
Ive used oxford sport panniers a fair few times on my NC23 and they are great. You need to get them far enough back that they are very close to the indicators but they work really well.
My only negative comment on the oxford stuff is that the fixings seem to be a bit rubbish. all of the straps seem bad at tightening. Ive ended up using long strips of velcro rather than the straps that came with them.
Oh, and to answer the questions.
Tankbag - i find it gets in the way, its right where you want to tuck in.
Rucksack - ive only toured with one once and it was a nightmare- i hated it. Bumbag for your bits and piceces is the better option - get a decent one though, i had one that the buckle started to randomly unclip. It got replaced before I lost it.
Tailpack - ive only had the oxford cheapy one and it worked ok. I used it a couple of times but then bought the panniers. I didnt need it after that.
stuff under the seat - if the bike is loaded up with kit, getting anything out from under the seat is a nightmare. tools, bikelock, spare bungies etc etc travel in the outside pockets.

Most of the trips i travel like this:
Also i use transparant stickers to cover the sides of the rear fairing against marks and dirt from the straps.
Tank bag is great if you don't want to race it on the autobahn. If you do, the topspeed is limited to 200
But it's nice to grab the easy stuff when you stop for fuel. It is also big enough for the weekend trips, and the Balance of the bike stay's in the middle.

That looks a proper Tourer! 8)
Is the back all stable though? It looks like there is only one bungee hook going on there!
....hhhmmm.... I'm going to give the Oxford magnetic tank back one more go! Perhaps ride around the block, to see if I can get use to it!
Have you ever looked at that Kruiger Tail pack luggage? Rate it?

It's very stable if you strap it good and tight. I don't have experience with bungee hooks, i think that you can't get it up to a tension that hold that heavy weight. Or you need more hooking points. You can also use the pillon pegs!

I think that a tankbag is even relaxer on long trips. Surely on the highway, because you can rest your upper body on it, so it's quit comfortable. But you musn't be in a hurry, above 150 isn't fun because you can't tuck in behind the windscreen.
And you can see your speedo indeed!
