How does a '35 tank breathe?

Does anyone know how a '35 tank breathes? The other day when I went to get some petrol, I opened the filler cap and there was a massive rush of air - best described as opening a fresh bottle of Coke. Is this normal, or do I have a tank breathing issue? As its the first time I've ridden the bike long enough to warrant filling it up I was a bit surprised to gear it. The bike itself runs perfectly well, so...

I'd appreciate an experienced answer please - something to stop me worrying would be good.

Thanks - I'll need to be checking it then. I take it the rush of air is not a good sign?

An outward rush is nothing to be worried about, an inward rush is the posibility that the vent has clogged.

While the vent is two way (my SV whistles if its cold and you move it into the sun) when its warm there is quite often slight overpressure.
