Starter solenoid goosed? Any ideas???
Hi there
went to start my bike today and it turned then kind of clicked aka dead battery except the battery is fine. I left my finger on the start button for a while and it eventually turned over and started.
Only problem though I noticed a bit of smoke( i think) from the starter solenoid, when it was not turning but power was going to it......
Any ideas? Just the solenoid or starter motor or something else?
Thanks guys, just dont want to set fire to my bike.

Re: Starter solenoid goosed? Any ideas???
hello-
do you have a multimeter?
i would check the wiring to and from the starter relay and also the wire that goes to the starter!!!!!
everthing must be working to a certain extent as you managed to get it started.
on the starter relay you can bridge the connections whilst the ignition is on and this should cause the starter to turn........
this indicates the relay to be fulty if the bike usually does not start

Hi mate
thanks for that but I do not have a multimeter and hate electrics..... I think I will change the starter solenoid for starters and clean all the wiring and see what happens.....
Any other tips are appreciated though??

Why a new reg/rectifier? If so are the ones from jap4performance ok? Or where would you suggest I get a good reasonably priced one from?

like viper says there could be other problems so you need to be certain the battery is good or not.
the clicking noise you hear is usually when the battery is so flat it can't produce enough power to crank the engine but indicates the starter relay is working.
get your multimeter set to dc volts 20 range if it gives you the option and get the bike started
put the negative lead to negative on the battery and the positive to the positive on the battery and rev the engine to 5000rpm...........
the readings you get should be between 13.5-15volts......

if you do this check and it comes back ok...then your reg rec is in good working order...

Ok well the battery is brand new, it doesnt loose any charge if the lights are on during the day but like I said it clicks and the starter motor doesnt turn over for a few seconds then it kicks in but I think its almost burning out as there is smoke!!!! Goosed starter solenoid then?

Re: Starter solenoid goosed? Any ideas???
if the battery is charging fine and is not loosing any charge or getting over charged then reg rec is fine and all other parts of the charging system.
problem lies within starter relay(solenoid) and the wiring between it and the starter.
try bridging the two connections on the starter relay with the ignition on,the starter turn.
try this and see if it does it easily enough without the delay and also minus the smoke!!!!!!!
