won't start :(

Post by speedstar »

bike has been off the road for the last few months while i got settled in to university, and when i went home at the weekend i couldnt get it started.
i know all four plugs are CAPABLE of sparking (have tested) and i know for sure cylinders 1 and 4 are getting a spark. after cranking i can smell petrol so i know thats not the problem but i am thinking mixture?
any advice on tuning the mixture just so that it will start? have a feeling the little brother may have had a tinker with the adjusting screw on the underside of the carb when i asked him to try starting it before a came home.
if i could ge tit running (however badly) i could ride it to a garage and have it tuned properly (it needed it before it went off the road anyway)
many thanks

have you taken the plugs out and checked there condition?
and are you sure fuel is getting to the carbs?
check if the choke is working correctly, and obviously make sure there is plenty fuel!!!!!

The problem persists. I have been away at university all year and not had the chance to look at the bike. Been working on it for a week and a bit and still not starting. Have replaced plugs and filters to no avail. Exhaust smells of petrol and earthed plugs 1 and 4 on the block and checked they sparked. (I figure that means both charge packs are fine?)

Its really getting to me now as i cant enjoy the bike and am in no fincial situation to pay hundred of pounds to get it running.

If anyone n knows what the problem could be... or how to get the bloody restrictor kit out of the carbs... and is willing to lend a hand or post on here it would be muchly appreciated :(

I'd try 4 x new plugs, test each lead individualally as 1 could have broken down internally. I'd also drain the tank and carbs and put fresh fuel in. Also try tapping the float bowls on the bottom of the carbs with a block of wood or similar as not to crack them incase a floats sticking. Restriction washers are found in the the forward inlet rubbers between the carbs and engine intake. If that fails I'd suspect Cdi or the carb O rings
