NC24 leaking oil. HELP

Post by MotorcycleAddictSA »

Hi all.

I have a '87 VFR400R that's been giving me hassles with oil leaks. My biggest concern is the leak originating behind the drive sprocket, on the gearbox output shaft. I have recently replaced this seal, an ordeal where one must remove the engine and split the lower crank casing, however the new seal does not seem to affect the leak at all. Is there anyone who may have some advice on stopping this pesky leak, hopefully without having to remove the engine once more?

Have you checked to see if the oil is coming from further up?

Yes, I have checked where the oil is originating from. It seems that the oil is only seeping by the abovementioned seal.

I did use black rtv to seal an oil leak before, maybe as a temporary fix? Is your output shaft straight and not bent?

Thank you for the advice. I'm don't believe that my output shaft is bent, but will check it if the problem persists.

You might have a groove worn into the shaft where the seal sits.

Is it a genuine seal?

Maybe it got damaged when it was installed.

As already mentioned the old seal might have worn a groove into the output shaft.
