NC30 Cylinder Head Question
Hi All,
The front Cylinder head on my NC30 has a cracked off engine mounting point, I have found a replacement head less the internals, but have just been told that I will need the cam caps from the replacement head otherwise it is no good? is that correct?
First time doing anything like this so not sure, just hoping i havent just brought an expensive lump of scrap metal.

There are no cam caps in the NC30 head.
Just fit everything out of the damaged head.

As hunter said,cams run in there own carriers so use all your old stuff from your old head...as a general rule other camshafts which have caps are line bored so are matched with the heads..

Err.. Then how do the camshafts stay in?

The cam-caps or camshaft holders are machined as interconnected connected pieces on the NC13e engines and not individual items but still provide the same function, only with reduced chance of mixing things up.
You will notice codes on the camshaft holders too, this is becuase I believe they are also machined as a matching set to the cylinder head they are originally supplied with to ensure correct camshaft clearnace.
If machining tolerances are close and wear is minimal then you might be able to just bolt them in but without a proper check you run the risk of the camshaft being too loose or too tight in places which can cause excessive wear / camshaft failure.
ERgo This is proabbly why you have been told by somebody that should ideally have the original camshaft holders that were made with the engine.
Dont have a VFR at hand an in pieces to check but my CBR line bored camshaft holders are marked with maching numbers on the engine block, I'm pretty sure the VFR ones are also machined as a set to the engine.

My reply was.THERE ARE NO (CAM CAPS) IN THE NC30 HEAD.
JUST FIT EVERYTHING OUT OF THE DAMAGED HEAD.
When it comes the the nc30, I would certainly rather run the cams in the original carrier, As it's the only moving component,You would have to re-shim anyway so don't see the problem.

yes there might not be no "cam caps" but there are cam retainers / holders. not sure which engine i was thinking of that has cam holders which are matched to the head but i dont believe its the nc30 having had a look in the parts book.hunter wrote:My reply was.THERE ARE NO (CAM CAPS) IN THE NC30 HEAD.

As you said its probably ok just to keep the original holders with the camshafts in this case and swap everything over just making sure valve clearances are re-done.
having just checked the parts book you could buy replacment holders when they were in stock (not stock anymore) and they didnt match them to a specific engine so i guess manacturing tolerances were so close that any minor difference between camshaft heiht wont affect the gear-drive or anything else in the engine liek skimming the head might.
cbr is definalty line-bored as the holders are only 1 half of the bearing surface hence the matched camshafts to the engine.
perhaps it was the vf400 engine i was thinking of (shows how long its been since ive swapped cams around in a v4!)
apologies for wrong advice. least its never too safe to check everything than just go ahead and wish in hindisght.

ah its just come back to me, its not the vf400 but the rc30 that has the cam holders that have separate tops not the nc30, but as a set and not mixing up the order of the tops should be ok to swap as a complete unit too
the nc30 ones are all a solid piece so as long as you dont mix up the order of the holders should be even easier.

Nice head on the pic, neo. Quietening gears removed and EFI cam sensor welded... Michael´s I guess.

saved in my folder of "future project ideas"
done pissing aroudn with bikes for the now but a custom made fi system is something id like to have a bash at, more from the programming / setup side than actual fab but will start with somethign simple like one of my single cylinder bikes I think.
