Broken idle screws??
Soo today i found out that 2 of the idle screws were broken, luckily i had extra ones. but when i tried to put new one I found out to have bent the needle of the idle screw which led me to the thought that the previous owner had broken it inside the carb and the peak of the screw is in the carb
(bought it a month ago)
Any suggestion on how to remove the rest of the old screw from the carb
wont sleep tonight...

Re: Broken idle screws??
if i cant solve that problem, can i compensate somehow with the butterflies balance? by opening the butterflies of the damaged carbs more than the others ?

Re: Broken idle screws??
there is only 1 idle screw.. i said this in another post.
the idle screw has the plastic adjuster on it and adjusts all the carbs.
you also have 4 pilot screws which adjust the fuel mixture of the carbs and 3 balance screws which are on the linkages and adjust the carb balance.
i think you are on about the pilot screws.. they are NOT idle screws, they change fuel mixture.
if you bent one by turning it in so hard it bent then it can break the carb inside and ruin the carb.
i had to spend 300 us dollars on a new set of carbs for a bike somebody did the same thing on.. they screwed in the pilot screw so tight it cracked the casing inside the carb and caused that carb to run super rich all the tiem.
you CANNOT compensate for any of the screws iwth other ones.

Re: Broken idle screws??
yes i meant the pilot screws, i turned them very gently but the end of the screw is so delicate that it got bent by the smallest amount of turning in and now i am hopeless
The problem isnt in the tight screwing but that someone before me broke the screws inside the carb and i cant screw in the new ones, because they get bent.. And here cant find another set of carbs so im thinking of a solution to the problem

Last resort:
Strip them completely down and separate the 4 carbs.
Get the body of each carb (with the stuck bit of adjuster) really hot and try banging the carb down on something flat.
You might get the bit out or your might completely fuck it.
Worth a try before you buy new carbs.
Just had a thought!
Get some small picks off ebay, they come in a set of 4 usually, then try to gently push the pointed end of the broken idle jet out from the mouth of the carb, I think you can just get to them as I'm sure when fully screwed in you can see the tip in the tiny hole. This last bit could be bollocks but worth a try.....

Re: Broken idle screws??
the screw does NOT get bent by the smallest amount of turning in though, ive worked on hundreds of carbs, you have to turn the screw until it becomes very tight and then turn it some more to bend / break the screw.demerdzhiev wrote:yes i meant the pilot screws, i turned them very gently but the end of the screw is so delicate that it got bent by the smallest amount of turning in and now i am hopeless

this also often breaks the carb inside too.
with pilot screws turn them gently until there is resistance then back out the required turns.
i think those carbs are ruined now as other people suggest. maybe a replacement set froma runnning bike will sort you uot

U sure i wont damage something from the temperature? If i remove the jets and the rubber diaphragm with the needle and the bowl cover with the sealing and put the carb in the oven at what degrees should i do it? 100?dobbslc wrote:+1^vfrman wrote:I hate to say it, but I think those carbs are fucked.

Re: Broken idle screws??
I just trying to visualise what you mean, but im guessing you mean the needle part of the pilot screws are stuck in the carb? If you can see the brass end of the screw an get it clean, you may be able to tin it with some solder an some flux, then tin a brass (like a brazing rod) rod, and solder it to the remains of the screw, its a mega long shot, but the solder wont stick to the ally carb. Also try putting some vinegar down the hole an letting it soak for a day or three and keep trying that.
If your heating the carbs remember to heat them all over so you don't warp them.
Good luck
Ian
