3TJ idles and revs fine in neutral but dies while riding?

Post by TechHeadFred »

Hi all,

I've seen a few threads here that seem to mention similar issues but I'm not sure of the exact cause in my case.

There are several possible issues here, as this bike was somewhat ill-treated by the previous owner/s and I've never had it running long enough to find the full extent of the issues it has!

Firstly, the carb air boots were misaligned and not connected to the carbs at all. Last night I connected them on the carb end as best I could with a coat of rubber grease to soften them up but they're not snugly connected at the airbox end.

This one was probably my fault, as I took the tank and airbox off to check the general condition of the bike and confirm that the carbs did in fact look as if they'd been worked on before troubleshooting the fault further.

Second issue I noticed while the tank was off last night - the petcock is not the right one and seems to leak when apparently in the "off" position. I have a replacement on order and found it at least seems to work when in the "res" position.

Thirdly, there's no reserve switch and the fairing infill panels are long since gone, so nowhere to mount one properly if I did have it. I already have a lead for sourcing those through this very forum, so that may not be an issue.
Having done a little research I doubt this relates directly to the issue I'm currently having as the tank has plenty of fuel and the fuel level sensor is connected correctly anyway.

I haven't had the chance to get the bike running long enough since fixing the first issue and giving the bike a warm-up earlier this evening with the petcock in a position that allowed the bike to start in the first place but would like to know where to look next if further testing gives the same result tomorrow.

Any other 3TJ owners out there who have come across similar issues?
If so, is there likely to be anything else I've missed?

Fuel filter they're a cheapish yamaha generic part so renew it. There's a gauze filter on top of the fuel tap - yours is new so that should be Ok, there's another in the carbs where the fuel pipe joins have a look ... it might not even be there.
I imagine the fuel pump is Ok.
Go to the top of the page and click the document library - there's a set manual for the SP version, that should help with carb setup.
I'd wait till you fit the fuel tap before panicking though.
The reserve switch was also used on the FZR1000 RU

Tested today up and down my street for about 10 minutes and seemed ok.

Thanks for your help so far. Will keep the fuel filter in mind if I have any further trouble.
Already found the document library a while ago, it's been very helpful already.

Ordered a reserve switch from an FZR1000 locally after a bit more research, so looking promising so far!
Will know for sure after the fuel tap has been replaced.

Any other FZRs that used the same rear wheel? One of the bolts holding the rear brake disc on decided it was weaker than my 6mm hex key even though I was able to loosen the other two with no damage. :x
