lock help?

Post by bludclot »

in the process of renovating my sf i would like to improve the key and lock situation for it but have come across a problem. the situation when i purchased the bike was that one key did all three locks and they worked well enough but the ignition lock looks well worn at best, screwdrivered at worst:

also the petrol cap was pretty shabby. i want to improve both these. The seat release lock was fine. my idea was to purchase a lock set from ebay from our chinese cousins. the filler cap seems fine but when i came to fit the seat lock the cable pull tab on the new (chinese) barrel is the wrong orientation:

i considered cutting a new tab slot in the bike frame but then the holding tab won't slide into place. So, does anyone know how to dismantle a seat lock barrel? Alternatively I can paint the original filler cap and retain the seat lock, would anyone then know how to replace the ignition barrel top - when done I want one key to fit all three locks obviously!

hi, just took my seat lock off and it looks like the tube pin pressed into the back of the white plastic cable holder needs to come out. it looks like a hole but is a very small metal tube split down its length and pressed into a fine hole in the plastic then into the shaft in the lock barrel. this will be difficult to get out due to its size. i have pulled out slightly larger pins by screwing a self tapper or similar just in it enough to get a grip and gently pull the pin out. my experience with lock barrels tells me that once this cable holder is off the internals try to escape, sometimes at speed. how is the new black cable holder fixed on. if the same method can you remove it and re-drill the fixing hole in the holder. this is going to be a tricky little fix. hope this is of some help.
