How to remove an NC30 rear shock

Post by jo »

I searched for "how to" guides on this which gave horror stories of wheel, swingarm and exhaust removal. None of which are necessary. Here's how my friend and I did it earlier today. I hope it helps others. It really is a simple "undo bolts" and "do them back up again". Here goes:

Tools:
Abba stand and rear paddock stand
8mm allen key (long reach)
Hammer & drift
10, 15 & 17mm sockets with extension bars
Screwdrivers (to remove fairing)
Someone to help

• Put bike on abba stand and rear paddock stand. The rear stand will not be on the floor. This is normal.
• Remove rear seat unit plastics.
• Loosen top bolt on the shock and use hammer and drift to tap the bolt out.
• The rear will drop and the paddock stand will now be on the floor.
• If it drops and you can’t get the bolt out, lift the shock from underneath the exhaust on the linkage and it should slide out.
• Now undo the nut on the bottom bracket which connects the linkage to the swingarm.
• Note which way up it goes - it is banana shaped and bends downwards.
• Remove the bolt and bracket.
• Now you can see the bolt on the linkage. Undo the two rear bolts (not all three) then slide the bolts out. You will need to move the linkage up slightly to gain access to the lower bolt.
• The shock is now completely free but the linkage is still in place. (Remove last bolt if you want to remove the linkage and slide out of position.)
• Now remove the following: Exhaust hanger nuts, remote reservoir bracket nuts, four front sub frame bolts, tank bolt, earth strap bolt on the frame
• Then take out the plug leads from the plugs, and remove the exhaust hanger and reservoir from the bolts on the frame so that they are free.
• One person must now pull the entire subframe out to the right side of the bike and another person can remove the shock from the swingarm. Remember the remote reservoir is attached!

Installation is the reverse of the above. Don’t forget to copperslip the bolts!
