Different coolant hose routing
Hi all
I could be wrong but am I right in thinking there is a way of re-routing the coolant hoses on an NC to make the flow more efficient on standard rads? If so is anyone running this set-up?
The reason I ask is that on very very hot days whilst on track my NC does get very warm not really when circulating round but at the end of the session when going back into paddock and back to my van it very nearly goes into the red.
The bike is stock barring a can and jetting to suit and the standard rads are in very good condition, I'm running without a fan and the coolant system was flushed at the start of the year and I'm running a water wetter type of coolant also. I'm considering buying some larger aftermarket rads but don't really want to trim away the belly pan as the paintwork etc is really nice so I'm wanting to try and keep the standard rads for this reason if possible.
Know you will all be saying put a fan back on but all my other NC track bikes previousley never ran a fan and all had standard sized rads (but we're Chinese ones).
Thanks

hmm, never heard of that mod jim,but i guess the rads are getting old by now(standard ones)and the flow is not as good as even a new chinese ones.putting a fan back on would be the logical step, but you dont want to go down that route so unless you can flush/check the fins on your standard rads its a good idea for chinese ones chap,as you dont want to risk blowing head gaskets etc..

Re: Different coolant hose routing
It sounds pretty normal that the temp will get really high after a good thrashing and a slow run.
I wouldn't just write off the rads as having less flow and being broken just becuase they are old, true age can bring neglect which will hamper performance but the 28 year old rad on my cbr is like new, not a single bent fin.
Plenty of things you can do to the stock system though if you havnet done.
Flush the cooling systme through with plenty of water, make sure the flush the rad and engine separate to avoide just moving gunk around, remembering to remove the drain bolts under the downpipes.
Check the waterpump impeller blades are all good.
Bottom rad is the one more prone to getting shitted up as it sits low to the ground, you can give it a good soak overnight in a big bucket of hot water / degreaser to loosen any shit in the fins and wash it throuhg with a hose / brush and compressed air.
the alternative routing basically changes the hose setup from a cross (X) type pattern to a || pattern, where the radiators are linked togheter if that makes sense
holts also do a good 2 part chemical cleanr which will disolve any shit in the engine block

No problem. It's not my drawing. I can't remember who sent it to me, but it was someone on this forum.

Re: Different coolant hose routing
James you got a Genny right?
Nice little trick is to get a cockpit cooling fan 12v then make a simple stand to allow it to be positioned against the rad and then run a couple of wires across to the Genny via a 12v supply.
Would stop the mother boiling up.
