NC24 Fuel Tap face gasket
Hi all, I have been struggling no end with this petcock on my NC24, the face gasket, the one with the 4x 10mm holes, was very badly perished when I got the bike, not wanting to get fuel in my oil, or put unnecessary pressure on my seats, I have made up my own from old inner tube, that swelled so much i could not turn the lever, I made some up from gasket paper, which works for about a week and then starts leaking again, I cannot find an original part or pattern part anywhere in my neck of the woods, and was wondering if some other bike uses the same thing?
I saw this but the description states it's a 26mm gasket and I believe the 24 uses a 32mm one:

I could of sworn I read someone used 4 o rings instead of a whole gasket, but cannot find any info online.
Any ideas or info will be much appreciated
Thanks guys
Cheers

Re: NC24 Fuel Tap face gasket
The description also states..
"Honda Year CBX1000 Pro Link 1981/82 "
Unless you are rebuilding a 1981 CBX1000 then this isn't the right tap.
Save your money and buy the proper parts just once instead of spending lots of time and money doing potentially dangerous bodge-work.
If your tap fails at that joint it can throw all the tanks fuel down over the bike and floor.. only takes a spark / cigaratte or other thing to have the whoel bike up in flames.
Inner tube is NOT petrol resistant.. it will disolve and could clog up your carbs leading to another carb strip down.
NRP in the UK sell tap rebuild kits that should be of suitable quality.
http://www.nrp-carbs.co.uk/honda_fuel_t ... ir_kit.htm
Try contacting them and asking as they do list the NC24 in the list of models.
Only other option is a known 2nd hand working tap, but you risk that failing too

Re: NC24 Fuel Tap face gasket
Hi thanks neo, I have contacted them, the problem is our postal service is useless, and it would cost it me almost 900 rand to get it here, that's a month's worth of petrol, not really happy about spending that on a piece of rubber, I'm sure Honda SA would be able to get me one for much less, I was just looking for a different way to do it/similar part used in a different model.
It seals perfectly on the tap itself, it leaks into the carbs when in the off position, this is not a leak outside the bike, just a drop every hour or so from the fuel pipe when I have the tank off and the tap in "off" position, it wouldn't even really be a problem as long as my seats are good, but I don't want to chance it.
I thought of a second tap in the fuel line, but would have to make a loop in the line to be able to reach it, and this might cause kinks.
I will sort it out, thanks for the advice.
Cheers

Re: NC24 Fuel Tap face gasket
I said a long time ago, old bikes cost a lot of money, and this one will.. bodging it will get you by for a little while then it will come back and bite you in the ass big time, ive been there and done it on many bikes when I were younger.Eben007 wrote:Hi thanks neo, I have contacted them, the problem is our postal service is useless, and it would cost it me almost 900 rand to get it here, that's a month's worth of petrol, not really happy about spending that on a piece of rubber, I'm sure Honda SA would be able to get me one for much less, I was just looking for a different way to do it/similar part used in a different model.

save the money and buy the proper part... a second tap is twice the things to fail.
Honda do not make a tap kit for this bike only a replacement tap so that will be mega money.
its not just a bit of rubber though, its a fuel resistant bit of rubber specially cut for a bike that hasnt been made in nearly 30 years and is the only thing that stops your bike from spewing petrol everywhere.. sure your tap isnt leaking now but if its already started to go then it will eventually give up the ghost.
If its leaking only that minor then for now its probably going to be ok but best thing you can do is save up and get a proper kit.. start putting some money in a jar for a while if you have to.
if you add up all the amount you will spend on other shit to do the job of a less quality it isnt worth it.
it will hold out for now but do the job once and properly and you can leave it for another 25 years then

Re: NC24 Fuel Tap face gasket
Hi Neo yeah I knew it would cost some, I just like to weigh my options, but in the end, I have contacted a guy in South Africa who ships in containers of stuff from the UK, and from NRP, and he said he'll sort me out, I just need to wait a few weeks for the next container, which is fine while I sort out the paperwork and get the bike roadworthy. My paintjob is finished and she looks awesome, I will post up pics as soon as I have good light to take pics in.
Just for interest, my sister is doing an english tutoring thing in Japan , and apparently Honda don't even make the taps anymore... so look after yours, the whole thing is discontinued... along with indicator lenses, and gear lever links... and who knows what else.

Re: NC24 Fuel Tap face gasket
yep, most stuff for the vfrs have been discontinued for years, dont forget its 30 years old almost.
I did say when you first asked about them that it would be a money pit of everyhting breaking and needing fixing and parts being unavaible... especially if you have to do internal work.
Honda never made a repair kit for the tap, the only genuine option was to buy a new tap, but there are plenty of aftermarket tap rebuild kits available so rebuilding a tap shouldnt be a problem for a while (unless you break it of course...)
just for reference though, when you could get a fuel tap they were about 200 euro new.
