NC30 Seat mountings keep breaking

Post by yamahaha »

Hello long time since I last posted, has anyone managed to come up with a solution to the brittle mounting points for the riders seat ? The seat needs re covering and I was thinking possibly of making a bracket to fasten to the subframe for the rear of the seat hollowing a small part of foam out of the back and attaching the seat to the bracket with a single screw because every time I weld the original lugs now the plastic just seems really brittle and breaks and its starting to annoy now.
Am I on the right track ? Has anyone else got fed up and done something similar? I'd love to hear about any other peoples Solutions for this problem...
..
Cheers in advance

Might upset the purists but I think I read on here someone used self tappers through the underside of the panels into the nylon seat base but would be careful of the lenght of screw used for obvious reasons .

Never had any break on the bikes i've owned before.

seen a few that have been broken by people being rough with them

If your repair is breaking it isnt as strong as the original or you are refitting it incorrectly.

is everything located properly? strange one

The lugs were broken when I got the bike but now you mention it when trying to attach the seat unit the mountings to screw the seat unit are all slightly out of alignment with the sub frame and I will pass on the self tapping screw option

Is the subframe bent?

Ive bonded broken mounts with q bond many times with sucess, even made new ones with plastex that havent broken from use. Id say something is a miss if they keep breaking.

used to happen fairly often on my NC30, usually fixed by plasitc welding or using some large washers to help spread the load.

it's a weak point that got fixed on the NC35 which mounts the seat differently

It's a terrible design in my opinion, on my track bike I put rivnuts into the top of the subframe and long m6 stainless bolts with big washers straight through the seat and they recess themselves into the foam, will be even better when I re do the seat and recess the section in the foam properly for the bolts.I also have gripper seat material on it, probably would not work so well with vinyl

Ah the rivnut idea is a good one :peace: But you need a rivnut inserted though or a welder to fix em but you have got me thinking now ..... That q bond type stuff is not a good idea to use as once its on the plastic you cant weld it at all ..... I have replaced the sub frame as it was badly twisted and I know the general consensus is that you can straighten it on the bike but I have seen snapped frame lugs for this ..... Going to tackle the job today and I will take some pics of my solution guys when the job is finished thanks for all the replies
