Help! NC35 not firing on front 2 cylinders

Post by sjparker »

Hoping the mechanically minded in this forum can give me a helping hand here!

I learnt the hard lesson never to use a Honda Main Dealer again (Crescent Motorcycles, Lowford, Southampton) - Terrible customer service and I ended up paying £270 and I'm not really sure I'm any clearer to resolving the issue than I was before the bike went in.

First off, I'm not mechanically minded at all, but I have a family member who is so and he's been helping me try to figure out why my beloved NC35 is only firing on the back 2 cylinders.

I had a few issues with a brand new battery being drained because of uprated bulbs and initially thought the rectifier/regulator might be playing up. Before I could even address that, the front 2 cylinders stopped firing.

I've had two suggestions so far:
- CDI Unit
- Pick up coil in crankshaft

Has anyone got any suggestions for helping with this problem? Is it a case where I just have to buy a new CDI Unit and/or Pick-up coil and do a process of elimination?

Any help would be much appreciated!

Swap the coils over to eliminate the coils.

So what did the honda dealer do for £270?

Yeah so we are going to try and swap the coils to test.

It looks like the did a "healthcheck" and standard diagnosis. Didn't help much. Wont use them again!

First off, what are the uprated bulbs? they shouldnt drain your regulator / battery unless they are something really sutpid.. and in which case they are likely to melt the switch first (espeically if it is a Japanese spec bike unmodded)

Easy to over-look from the new problem but the bike needs a good electric supply to run properly... is your battery / charging system ok? A flat battery could be from over / undercharging.. either can make a bad running bike but over-charging can fry the ECU too.

Get the charging system fully tested before delving further..

Then you can check as already mentioned, pickup coils and ignition unit.. of course check obvious things like broken wires.. check the coilpack themselves (you can swap front and rear over and if you still get spark at the rear using the front coil pack then the coilpack is ok..

I had an issue where putting uprated bulbs was draining my battery, two weeks later the regulator completely stopped working and killed the battery and burnt all the wiring and melted plug points in the harness together. After replacing the regulator and replacing the battery, it now holds charge and starts perfect every time even with the uprated bulbs... Moral of the story, if the regulator is on its way out, don't leave it until it is too late.

Ok so took the bike into an independant mechanic for diagnostics this is what he's come back with:

"One coil pack has packed up the other one has a very weak spark also the sparking unit has burnt out. sparking unit is £272+ the VAT, coils are £124+ VAT each"

Should I go with the genuine parts or is there anywhere else to pick them up slightly cheaper?

Thanks in advance all!
