cbr400rr nc23 k (89) charging issue's

Post by Parker »

Right so my bikes not charging.

i've recently found my reg/rect had burn't out so replaced it(with none genuine) and still wouldn't charge so we replaced the alternator (stator coils) and she charged for a while and then stopped. Had another look at the non genuine reg it had burnt out again, replaced it with New genuine (still in the box) reg/rect unit and it wouldn't charge so we figured the alternator had blown again, after trying the electrex g17 which didn't even fit !!! i found a second hand genuine alternator on ebay and fitted that and i've started her up and i've only had 12.5 volts in battery(engine running) i then put the live feed on the alternator wires one at a time (the yellow wires coming straight from the alternator) and as far as me and my dad (car mechanic for 20+ years) are aware we should have somewhere upto 50 volts unregulated ac voltage coming out of the alternator we only had 1-3 volts on any of the wires.

Basically i want to know have i bought a dodgy stator coil or maybe the magnectic drum has lost it's magneticness (i dropped a 1/4 inch socket bar in and it felt pretty strong trying to get the bar out but is there a way to test if it's strong enough or is there another problem common to these bikes i'm not aware of ?

Any help would be great !! i've been without her for 2 weeks and i'm dying to get back on her !!

From what youve said, it looks like you had a duff alternator that blew the reg/rec. how old is the battery as that wont help matters if its not in good shape. Give GFRacing a call as they have stocks of used tested parts for the cbr400. 8-)
