NC23 - Do I really need a Fuel Pump?

Post by ned800 »

Hi,

I had breakdown recently which I was able to resolve by bypassing my fuel pump. It seems as though it has packed in after 30 years and has been the bain of my life for the past 14 months that I've owned my nc23. (4 AA callouts already!) Since the bypass (2 months ago) I haven't actually replaced the pump and everything seems to be running fine (with the filter still in the circuit, don't worry!)

The only thing it seems to have perhaps affected is the idle rpm. I'm having to idle at 2000 now othewise she farts to a stop at the lights which can be embarrassing.

Would you recommend coughing up the £30 to get a new pump or just keep running the way.she is? Is there anything damaging about idling at such high rpm? Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Many thanks,

Ned.

Personally I would get it fixed or a new pump.

You can run without it I suppose as many bikes dont have pumps but if your running low on fuel it might not go through to the carbs just on gravity alone as i think the carbs may be higher than the fuel left. Other reasons i can think of is if a carb float sticks open and you dont turn your fuel off it will flood and keep on overflowing or filling the engine with fuel or if the bike goes over fuel will still flow through and I suppose gravity feed alone may not feed the carbs at higher revs. But I'm no expert on this and its just my thoughts. I'm sure there's an expert on here with full knowledge.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Honda-CBR-900 ... 1e72f10fcb to repair your oem fuel pump. Heard that the cheap chinese replacement fuel pumps are rubbish and to be avoided. 8-)

I work on the principal that if Mr Honda designed it to have one it must have one. Honda don't really make a point of over engineering stuff just for the sake of it.

Replace it....
