Engine, Frame, V5 numbers

Post by Andyladdo »

Hello all, i am new on this forum and this is my first post.
I am looking to buy an RVF400, an i have a few questions regarding numbers. I have been to look at bike and mechanically it is mint, i just want to make sure it is sound. Where are the engine and frame numbers, if any? What should they look like? Apologies if these sound like stupid questions, i have done a lot of searching and i cant find anything to help me. I have never bought a import bike so i just want to make sure i am not missing anything.

If anyone has any other help or advice, then that would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Andy

Hi.welcome.frame numbers are stamped on the right hand side of headstock.you cant miss them!they should be straight and untampered with(you can tell if theyve been ground down/fiddeled with!)engine numbers are on the top of crankcase righthand side next to number 3 cylinder.(rear right)they are quite hard to see so you will need a torch to shine down between frame/engine.same as above.should be straight not ground down.not all(in fact none that i know of!)engine/frame numbers match(ie:are the same)not on nc30's afaik...just common sense really..you will know if theyre dodgy!!.if anything is amiss ask to see legal proof/receipt otherwise walk away..remember if you buy a stolen/ringed bike you lose it and your money(unless you can find said seller and string him up in the cellar and beat the money back outa him!!!.good fun but highly illigeal!! )good luck

Brilliant, thanks for your help and quick replay. What you have told me is kind of what i though, i just wanted to check. Are the headstock numbers machine etched or 'hand' stamped. I looked at R6 a few years ago, it should have had dot matrix style etched numbers but they were wonky and hand stamped!

Yes.later bikes(r6/r1.milles etc)have the laser dot markings.nc30/35 have normal 'hand' stamped numbers(although i think they are done on a machine at the factory)they can be done 'factory style' by hand if they know what theyre doing!.but few and far between these days...just check against log book.check for rough/dimmpled castings.and if alls good you should be ok.
