Electrical Question NC35
Hi All,
Fortunately I haven't had to post on this section before as the RVF has been good to me in the four years I've owned it and hasn't thrown up anything I couldn't sort out.......however:
I was out on a quick ride on Christmas Eve when the bike suddenly died on me. I had only been going for about five miles. Pushed it home which nearly killed me, and have only now got round to sorting it.
Battery had dropped below 12V so I charged it. Started first time after charge but a quick check whilst running at 5k revs showed only 11.74v at the battery. So I immediately suspected the regulator/rectifier (RR) or stator coils. It still has the original RR fitted.(Miracle it's gone on this long I suppose)
I have done all the relevant checks which show the stator coil resistance etc. is fine. Checked the RR and the readings for this are all over the place. So that, I don't doubt, is the problem.
However one of the other checks I did was to check voltage between the red and green wires of the RR connector block once the RR was disconnected. My manual says to do this with the ignition on and sure enough there is full battery voltage present as it says there should be, fine, but there is also full battery voltage present with the ignition turned off.
Now I am as dense as a lump of concrete when it comes to electricity and I find wiring diagrams very hard to read but to my mind there shouldn't be any voltage with the ignition off and that perhaps there is a problem in the ignition switch............or does the RR when actually connected in act as a break with the diodes preventing flow until its receiving current from the generator?
Also on a slightly different tack the original RR fitting mounts are 70mm centre to centre but the replacements I have been looking at all seem to be 60mm centre to centre. I know there are a whole host of different options for RR replacement but do any of them come with 70mm fittings.
Anyhow your thoughts would be appreciated.
Many Thanks Gav.

Re: Electrical Question NC35
Im as dense when it comes to electrics but i know the RR shorts to earth when battery is fully charged.so the switch might show 12 v when off.but someone will be along soon to completly blow my answer to smithereens!!!(probally neo!)
