SP valve springs and buckets

Hi,

I wondered if anyone can confirm the following info (sourced from various posts on here and the internet)

FZR 400 rrSP valve springs have yellow paint on top end of spring
Fzr400rr valve springs have greeny/blue paint on top of spring

FZR400rrSP valve buckets have a blob of yellow paint on the underside
FZR400rr valve buckets have blue paint on the underside

I am in the process of trying to build the best race engine from 2 race engines. One engine has greeny/blue springs and yellow dots on buckets (originally running 1mm oversize pistons, kent cams and slick bass built engine). The other (unknown history) has yellow springs but a variety of blue dots and no dots on buckets.

My guess is that the ideal would be to have yellow springs and yellow valve buckets however,

I can't find any appreciable difference in mass between blue and yellow valve buckets...just under 1g. My question is does the colour coding run through all FZR400 models...could I have a mix of compenents from the earlier fzr400 and also the fzr400rr 3tj and fzr400rrsp 3tj?

So spring are indeed coded yellow, the only way to identify the SP buckets is the measure or weight them. The SP buckets are slightly shorter and weight 9.5g to the RR 12.5g if memory serves me well.

With the greatest of respect don't build 3tj race engine unless you know what you are doing, there are numerous tricks involved with building a reliable one, miss them and it will fail, guaranteed.

Cheers Kiyoshi, On measuring the RR valve buckets appear to be 13.3g +/- 0.3g. As for knowing what I am doing....It's hard to tell since I don't know what I don't know! I'm not tuning the engine or trying to extract more hp, just replacing broken parts after a head gasket failure.

Taggy, would love to buy your engine but the bank manager isn't so keen!!

Sorry hope I didn't sound pessimistic, if you are not tuning it don't worry about SP springs or buckets, won't make any difference at all. There is something very simple you can do to instead and as mentioned the oil way MUST be modified if it goes near a track, not doing so will most certainly result in crankcase shaft failure.

buckets, not worked on them for a while, if you look inside the buckets they are different as one of them have a smaller blob on the inside, so it will change the shim size to be used in the head,
