Vfr Spluttering and wont go over 5000 rmp
Hi all
I’ve just replaced my battery in my bike, (dead cell in old one) and was traveling up a hill the bike suddenly started to splutter. About 1 Km up the road the bike died. No over heating and enough fuel. I managed to start the bike, but it would not rev over 5000, and it spluttered. It will not start with the choke at all, but will start with throttle. It feels as if it’s running on 1 cylinder. I checked the spark and it seems to only be firing on the front left cylinder (very weak spark). There's a strong petrol smell in the exhaust. Could this be my Rec/reg gone?? Im Going to test the voltage to the battery tonight.
Has anyone had this problem before?
I still have my original Rec/Reg on the bike (I added a heat sink to it ages ago).
I don’t want to buy a new Rec/Rec if the old one is still fine.
Is there anything else it could be??
Thanks

check the fuses as well as the reg rec,i had an nc30 drop 2 cylinders when the clock fuse went on the bike
It's not having what you want but wanting what you've got....Loud ,Proud and Modified ....

at exactly 5K RPM, that's when it cuts to 2 cylinders if you totally remove the speedo. check that everything is ok there, earths, etc.

The bike splutters up to 5000rpm it won't idle at all ill check the speedo , but if it ran on 2 cylinders it would feel a lot better than it is. Its got no power at all. Cant even pull off without dying.

if it is happening all the time then it could be a fueling problem..........take the plugs out and check what condition they are in.
it sounds as if it may be running rich and when you try the choke it makes it worse.......that makes sense as that primarily draws more fuel in and would make it even more rich which is why it wont start at all with the choke!!!!!!

I'd tip that it is the reg/rect considering it happened after you replaced a dud battery. Sort it before you damage the new battery too.

Thanks Guys for all the help
I've managed to solve the problem. I was not getting any spark to the plugs and using the Service manual traced it back to the spark unit. It was a lose cable on the spark unit.
Thanks again for all the assistance.
