Looking at NC35, help wanted

Hey everyone, I'm new here. I'm looking at my next bike, a RVF400. From what i can see on the ad it looks ok. The thing that has me worried is it hasn't run for 8 months, supposedly. The seller claims that it is an electrical problem (not uncommon I hear!). Is this a major problem? Thanks for any advice!

where is it for sale? give us a link or something to go on...

not run for 8 months is not really a big deal in itself - it depends if it was prepared for sitting that long. If the battery was not on charge it will be dead.

Electrical issues on these are common - regulators die and take batteries out.

This is a 6 hour drive for me so I would like to be pretty certain before I drive down. Do you think it would be worth taking a reg/rec and multimeter with me to check it? Thanks for the welcome, this forum seems to be really good already!

I'm not sure of bike prices in your area, but $3700 (Is this AUD?) seems a bit high for a non runner. He also says the tires and fluids and battery are new...new as in just put them on or new as in they were new when it stopped running. 8 months of sitting and I'd replace the fluids, and that battery might not be good either.

I'm also not seeing the air ducts in any of the pics. And lastly, I'd question just why those fairings are new....

Sorry, just a bit skeptical.

I'd want to know why it won't start and get some footage of it trying - also would like to know some details, as Steve sad, about when was the fluid/tyres etc - New = new. not, was new once and is never used.

Is that money good?? Including your travel? if you hammer them down for it then you'll hopefully end up with a decent bike.

Why 95% complete? What was done to it to lose that 5% if it used to run?

It is a shame you have 6hrs to go and see it... We have a fair few of my colonial cousins on here, hang about and am sure one of them will see this thread - they might know the bike, know the person, or the seller might even have registered on here

Thanks for the quick replies! I'll find out some more information and get back. A mate of mine had a look yesterday and said the frame and engine weren't marked/no obvious signs of a drop but the seller said it had a light drop on the left side. I asked about the air intakes and there are included, just not pictured. It seems abit steep to me for a non runner, but I want a fixer uper. Just not too much fixing!

Nothing wrong with a fixer upper if you keep in mind it often costs more than a good one to get back to proper spec.

That bike looks a bit rough with the aftermarket paintwork, seems odd he wouldnt get the issue sorted if its only simple issue.

Worst case your looking at melted wiring loom, new battery / reg/rec and genny.

Ususually an older and / or neglected battery will strain the reg/rec and kill it off which will either overvolt and kill the ignition unit or undervolt and youll run out of juice and the bike will stop.

Is it a lerarner legal biek your after? or just the rvf?

Ok, time for an update!

It turns out the battery was dead and he has managed to fire it up! It seems to run ok in the video he sent me. I'm not overly worried about the body work, but it does look a bit average. The fluids, battery and tyres were replaced about a year and a half ago. Probably explains why the battery has died!

He has said he will honour the price, so I'm pretty keen to jump on it now.

Opinions?

Neo, I have sold my Daytona 675 to get a NC35! I have had my open licence for a number of years, but have always wanted one of these bikes!

I see... being a learner legal bike would put me off a little as many of them have been neglected, not many learners have the tools and skills and money to clean and grease swingarm bearings, head bearings etc.

Ever considered the NC30? I find it a better bike out of the two (depends on what your looking for though...) and afaik they were not learner legal?

If it has to be an nc35 id be wanting the best i could get especially if its something you plan on holding onto for a while..

That's a good point, when I did the REVs check on this bike it mentioned it wasn't learner legal. Although the model is listed on the approved bikes list for learners.

I have considered the NC30, but haven't found one that really appeals to me. I know it's opening a can of worms, but why would you consider them to be better?

All my riding is track, so I'm not worried about appearance!
