hard starting....

Post by leopard_pagan »

lately my bike has been getting harder to start.
it had a reconditioned starter motor, new battery, NO alarm fitted, new plugs, HT leads were checked in Feb/March of this year
it had a "good" 2nd hand fuel pump last winter. but the bike shop said that it will need replacing in 2-3years time due to its condition. it ticks away happily. + there will be fuel left in the carbs to start it with.

the bike kicks over fine.. but its that last catch and go that seems to be taking its time! winters not even here yet for it to suffer with the cold. its kept in a metal shed + covered if it drops below 4c in the night.
it gets ridden everyday.

Whats the mileage like? it could be that the piston rings are getting a bit tired so you arent getting as much compression. Once it warms up they expand enought that its ok.

I presume youve done regular oil changes, what oil do you you use?
Too many bikes, so little time!

if you are giving it plenty choke then i would not be considering the cold weather but it is bloody cold up here.
keen frost most nights and mornings, the choke on my 125 is gubbed and it is a :Soap: nightmare to start in the mornings.
i would burn the bloody thing but it probably would not burn.
how is it starting later on in the day,or even after it does fire up?

it gets 1 oil/filter change a year May-ish time, oil from bike shop.. rockoil i think 10/40W semi.
no blue smoke from exhaust. a normal symptom of rings.
total mileage is 88,000klm 55,000 miles

always start with full choke, once going start to push it back in in-between getting my gear on.
but latley it doesnt matter what choke position you have. been getting worse in the last 2 weeks

is the choke definately working?
after the bike has started and you have went for a run or to work and switch off, does it easily start again....give it a try and see.

it normally sits for 8hrs before it gets started again..
but we shall see as i have a half day at work..

>update<
still took a few cranks of the starter to get it going with just 1/2 day sat.

i think i may want to get the reg/rec checked! as far as i know.. its still the original one from Mr Honda. i have never changed it since i have owned the bike despite all the weird headlight mods!

if you have a multimeter then do a few simple checks.......usually just seeing how much of a charge the battery is getting is enough to realise what is going on.

When did you have your valve clearance check ?
Try holding a rag over the exhaust when starting ?

I doubt your reg rec.

see how much soot comes out?
see if any oil is present?---- oil level in bike has not dropped.

can and one remember what the readings should be for reg/rec test on off/idle/revving to what rpm?
