NC30 17 inch rear wheel
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to fit a 17 inch rear wheel from a VRF 750 or 800 to my NC30? Ive seen some new 17" wheels on ebay but they are a bit pricey.

Failing that if you can get a RVF rear wheel that will fit on with no mods and it is a 17"

Re: NC30 17 inch rear wheel
if you put a 17" rear wheel on, dont you have to either use the rvf dongbone linkage with the standard nc30 shock OR use an aftermarket shock.matty_boy wrote:Failing that if you can get a RVF rear wheel that will fit on with no mods and it is a 17"
otherwise it will sit too low and steering will be poo?????????????????????
im not 100% but i thought i heard something about it.

Re: NC30 17 inch rear wheel
It would be good if we could have a comprehensive list of replacements as a kind of FAQ, including mods required, weight (if possible) and recommended tyre section.
Can anyone help complete this list? Many of the quantities i'm guessing at, here
Wheel: NC30 Stock
Size: 18" x 4.5"
Tyre: 150/60-R18
Weight: 4.2kg (Rim Only)
Wheel: NC35 Stock - MC28 (NSR250) Stock or Magtek
Size: 17" x 4.5"?
Tyre: 150/60-R17
Weight: 4.3kg Stock, 3.4kg Magtek
Mods: None
Wheel: VFR750 Stock
Size 17" x 5.5"
Tyre: 170/60-R17 (stock) is 160 ok?
Weight: 5.8kg
Mods:modified Axle + sprocket spacers for necessary chain clearance (£125 from Rick Oliver, exchanges your old axle.)
There are apparently a couple of types of these VFR750 wheels:
Size: 17" x 5.25" (Magnesium) - 5.50" (Carbon)
Tyre: 160?
Weight: ???? (not much...)
Mods: None?
Direct imitation of OEM wheels, no mods required
Weight: 4.9kg?
Please feel free to correct or add to this post, folks...
There are other solutions I have heard of, including a Ducati Dymag, which required machining at the back to make space for the brake bolts, NTV400/650 (mods required, can't remember what) Honda RS250 (spokes face the opposite way, requires machining also?)
Other effects of swapping to 17" rear:
HEIGHT
-------
To increase the rear height past original for faster steering, do both. (^^^ is this right? i mean does the tri-linkage change ride height, or is it otherwise interchangeable with no effect?)
GEARING
---------
The diameter affects the final drive ratio between countershaft/road. So, with a 17" conversion your acceleration is greater (which is good) but a slightly lower top speed is achieved in each gear. A similar effect to if you added 1.5 teeth to your rear sprocket.
The speedo reports high by 4%, and if you want to rectify this by swapping sprockets, the required final drive is 2.564: 15F/38R gives 2.533, 15F/39R gives 2.6.

Wheel: Dymag NC30 - rare as hens teeth and cost heaps. New ones only available in 3-spoke? which I personally don't prefer the look of. Also subject to minimum order quantities for new.vfr4 wrote:You're right, thats a 5.5" wide wheel which is too wide. Theres a bit of demand for them from VFR750 riders who want to change from the wheel you need (5 rounded spokes) to the 8 spoke type.rdstars wrote:Thanks, its the 5 spoked one ive put an offer in for, I did see one that looked like the nc30 wheel, still 17" and 4 nuts but I take it that one dont fit.CMSMJ1 wrote:You need the one with the 5 rounded spokes too btw

I'm sorry but we no longer produce the 5 spoke single sided casting to suit the RVF400. We can still make the 17 x 5.25 from our 3 spoke cast mag range but a minimum order of 5 sets is required.

HEIGHT
-------
So the ride Height is lowered, and this can be compensated by using a shortened/RVF dogbone or RVF Tri-linkage (which also uses needle roller bearings instead of bushes)duh_ave wrote: if you switch from the stock 18" wheel to a 17", get a hold of the RVF400 (NC35) pull-rod (dog bone suspension link).
It's 5mm shorter than the stock part which will give you 15mm more ride height. You'll need this to help correct chasis geometry issue the smaller wheel will create.
You can also have yours welded up and redrilled the 5mm shorter.
It also changes the rising rate of the rear suspension and makes it pleasantly more progressive.

Re: NC30 17 inch rear wheel
The rs250 wheel requires mods, it won't clear the brake disc bolt heads.

Re: NC30 17 inch rear wheel
NSR250 MC28 rear wheel is exactly the same as the RVF 17"
as is the Honda Magtek fitted to the SP NSR MC28
I have a RVF 17" at home (bare rim) and if I remember I will weigh it tonight for you, if this thread had gone up a week ago I could have given you the weight for a Magtek as well but they have tyres on them now.

Re: NC30 17 inch rear wheel
I've got a VFR750 wheel that i'm about to fit.
I'll weigh it tomorrow and take pics of the process so everyone can see :-)
I'm doing it purely for aesthetic reasons and the choice of rubber, plus i like engineering!!
Hope this will help everyone :D
