Crash Bung recomendations

I am after some advice on crash bungs?, more what style rather than what brand.

What are peoples experience with the non drill and the drill type after an off.

Worried that the non drill ones may end up doing more damage by stuffing an engine mount or casing.

Will be running replica glass so not worried about cutting a hole.

Hi John,

I would go with the R&G crash bungs that go through the engine mounts, just use a hole saw drill bit to get a nice smooth hole in your fairing.
Some people dont use bungs yet others do, due too at times they can cause more damage than good.
Ive club raced for a few years now and the bungs ive used have always done there job correctly, but i have mates that there bungs have dug into the ground(grass) and fliped the bike over instead of sliding.

non drill R&Gs everytime for a road bike, drill type for a trackbike.

I have had a bike flip due to bungs digging into grass, however I still say the bungs saved my forks, frame and engine casings that day as it scraped along the track a fair way before hitting the grass.

iv got a set of non drills on my road bike and planning to do trackdays and some racing next year, should i get some drill ones aswell and swap them for the track fairings?

do the non drill ones go into the threaded hole that does not have a bolt in usually on the engine? as on mine the thread was trashed and i had to re-cut the thread (effectively cross threading), so im not keen on working that thread too much.

Spike,

I usually make my own bungs and fit them to the most solid part of the frame which is normally engine mounts.
Dont worry if you have no thread left just put a suitable sized bolt through with a nylon locking nut on it.
Ive chewed many of bungs and threads up on the track and they always hold up, if you rip the thred out of a M12 hole just use an M12 nut and bolt...
Depending on your bike a bung needs to be in at least 10mm hole or it will just bend to easy on impact..
Where you recut the thread does this hole go straight through or does it have a solid bottom...?

i think it goes strait through, i supose i could just get a longer bolt and nut behind it

On the NC that ive got it has 2 empty mount holes near the front of the frame, thats where im going to bolt mine into, ive raced a 600rr for the last 2 seasons and that had similar holes as to where these are..

Had my eye on the R&G no drill type. Couldnt bring myself to drill my fairings!
