3tj1 sooty grey smoke

Post by chris6409 »

Hi ive removed and cleaned tje carbs replaved one of the air/fuel mixture screws and turned them to 2 1/2 turns out ive bench synced the carbs the best i could cleaned everything and replaced the gaskets on the float bowls . Due to leaks also ive replaced the daft plastic centre on the fuel tap with one from a suzuki gs 500e Its metal and much better.
So its all back together with the new lower fairings i got off the bay and new head light loom that needed to be replaced due to idiots becoming electricians overnight. i charged the battery whilst maintenace was being done and she burst into life straight away.
However shes really rough with grey smoke and she smells very sooty and ideas guys

Grey smoke ... Well white smoke is usually steam, its water vapour which can sometimes be in the air box or air filter and sometimes in the exhaust can. That can cause the engine to run rough until the heat has dried everything out.

If however it doesn't clear then it can be water getting to the combustion chamber - thats a blown head gasket. Run it up to temperature a few times and allow it to cool down completely in between. If that does clear it then when the engine is cold open the radiator cap and see if its clean, likewise the oil top up cap. If theres any brown foam on either the head gaskets gone.

2.5 turns out in the factory manual.
Replace the cut down can and take it to a dyno

If youre trying to get the bike to run right having a cut down generic can isn't going to be the best place to start. If everything else is standard on the bike and it's all set to standard then it would help if the can was too. That way you at least know where youre starting from.
