nc 30 timing..?

Post by steve92 »

Is there a timing setup guide on the forum or a link to setting the timing.?

I had both heads off the race bike and changed the cams. I put in rvf cams and assume the timing setup is the same.?
Problem is i've followed the haynes manual with all the timing marks on the cams and at the inspection cover as by the book and its still not right. Its not firing at all and the sounds it making makes us pretty sure the timing is wrong.

We were thinking we must be 180 degrees out and switched them over a few times but its no better. I'm pretty sure we are going about it the right way but just went off track at the start.

We did start at the rear head last night and messed about until 11.00 pm last night and give up. Had to borrow my mates bike for racing today.

Maybe there is a fool proof way to go about it.?

Only way to accurately do it is to degree the cams. You need to setup a degree wheel and accurately measure TDC on cylinder 1 (heaps of guides on the internet for this). From there, you can then setup a dial gauge and check valve lift at 1mm and compare the open/closing values to the spec in Haynes.

Aside from installing the cams 180 degree's out, unless the cams are slotted, the only other thing could be being 1 tooth out which would be come very obvious checking using the degree wheel

It should be very simple - and as long as you turned it over by hand when you reset the valve clearances you should not have bent anything if it was out..

Get the service manual and use that too - in the docs section ^^top of the site

I don't really understand how to degree the cams. For now i'd just like to get it right with the timing marks to get me out for the last race meeting this year. Over winter i'm going to get the cams modified with an adjustable gear and then look into doing what your saying.
I've definitely not got the the exhaust and inlets mixed up, It doesn't matter which exhaust or inlet cam goes in the front or back head does it.?

I'd turned it over by hand a few times and there was no binding at all, made sure it wasn't going to touch any valves.

I never noticed the document section before, thats handy i'll have a read through it now.

Take the all 4 cams right out and start again is my suggestion, its not too difficult if you follow the haynes or workshop manual, just takes a bit of patience and triple checking everything.

Unless im mistaken the cams are different for each head, fronts should have 'FR' and 'IN' or 'EX' and the rears should have 'RR' and 'IN' for inlet and 'EX' for exhaust.

Like Mark says you shouldnt have damaged anything if you only turned it over by hand, im suprised you didnt feel valves touching pistons if you have the front and rear cams mixed up.

I'm going to start again and check if they did get mixed up. I thought it was covered on here before that the two inlet cams and the two exhaust cams are the same even if marked different. I should have put them in as per markings just to be sure.

The NC has a 360 deg crank, firing at 90 and 270 deg intervals.
Firing order is 1 4 3 2, and timed using T1 for cylinder 1 and T2 for cylinder 4. [not 2]
The f/r cams are the same but the timing mark is 180 deg apart on each cam .[360 deg on the crank]
Refit the cams in the correct locations and time by the book.
Ti, fit rear cams with timing marks aligned, turn engine 90 deg forwards to T2, fit front cams and align marks.

Got sorted now, you where right. I had the inlet cams in the wrong heads and the timing marks are 180 deg apart. I should have checked them instead of rushing but i did read here on an old thread they are the same...! Main thing is its sorted now.
