Fairing repair

Im currently in the process of repairing my nose cone, top fairing, front fairing - you know which part i mean

The common problem is the one I have where the fairing has snapped from the mirrors back and I was wondering how I could get this piece replaced. My initial idea was to try and find a piece of plastic of slightly larger size and manipulate it with heat and patiece but trying to find something suitable is beginning to be problematic. Its an oem fairing and not the fibreglass type.

Any suggestions as to fixing this bit of the fairing?

the piece is totally missing sadly and it was like it when I bought the bike.

hopefully should be a photo uploaded showing the missing bit. As you can see it's snapped at the mirror part and a bit missing at the end also

Ok, your not missing much, that crack can definitely be plastexed. The missing part could also be plastexed but you would need another one to take the mould off. I could help you out but Kent is a bit far for me.

The same repair compound could be used to replace the missing part but it will take a bit more skill, effort and patience

Looks to be something within my skill base so I'll give it a good go.
The interesting part will be making up the new part that's missing as I have something to take a mould from.
If it goes well I'll tell the world if I fail I'll hide the evidence

Really no problem with some Plastech/Plasetex and a little bit of patience. Some pics from a repair I did MANY moons ago - which is still going strong. Apologies for the small pics - but they date back to the Old forum when you had to make em small



Using something like a dremel make sure that both sides of a crack/break are chamfered to give as much surface area as possible for the plastech to adhere to.



Use something like aluminium tape to place against the back side of the repair and VERY roughly to shape the mission portion of plastic. Apply plastech as described (build up a bit at a time) and once you have slightly overfilled the repair, even infilling the holes for now -leave alone until the next day.



Break out the wet and dry and sand back to the original profile…



Carefully (and with sharp drills) - re-drill the holes for the screen brace / mirror mounts. Sand the holes with some wet and dry to remove any burs and stress raisers. Prep for paint etc….


..And just to prove a point - I got knocked of that one after it was all sprayed up (Rothmans), and in the spill it was actually the other side of the nose cone fairing that gave up before the repaired side (repaired side in the background of picture)…..so it was out again with the plastech

When you get the Plastex kit you'll have a bar of moulding plastic, you warm it up but don't use to much heat or it will liquiify. Take a mould of the mirror holes from the other side (just the holes not the edges of the panel). Open the cracks up with a V groves from the back of the panel, use a scalple or Stanley knife then cut into the side of the V cut to make it rough.
Use some masking tape over the crack on the outside of the panel if you take it around the edges it will hold the two pieces together. Fill the crack south of the mirror hole. After about 15 mins you can cut the excess plastex if its leaked into the mirror hole. After another 15 mins it should be st enough to take the tape off.
Now put the mould into the mirror holes use some masking tape to make a rough panel edge and fill in with Plastex. Fill the rest of the panel cracks and let it dry for about an hour. Shape the panel edge with a palm sander

Thank you fellas, I'll be sure to order the kit tomorrow and have a crack at it.
How would I build up the bit missing part as there's about 3 inches missing. Would it be a case of putting tape on the inside of the panel , shape it and build up layers?
