NC29 Wiring

Post by frazer81 »

Hi,

I noticed yesterday smoke coming from under the seat on my nc29. :o Today i took the rhs rear panel off to be greeted to the sight of about an inch in length section of the bikes loom was melted and there was bare wires visable where there had been a short hence the smoke. :( :(

Guy i got the bike from has a spare loom in his house somewhere but my question is does the main part of the loom that runs from the reg have a connecter under the tank so i could un plug that part of the loom and replace it?

Dont really want to replace the loom as i have no spare time to do so ( how long would this take and how much dismantling do i need to do ) could i cut out the section that is damaged and add a new section of cable in with connectors and re tape or would replacing the full loom be better.

Looks like the part of the cable has been rubbing against the rear panel and over time split etc and caused the short. Bike still runs but battery keeps dieing. First thought was rec had gone till i seen the smoke.

Any help or ideas would be great. The bike is on a g plate and i think is a "L" model but i am not sure.

you could do it in a day, you will need to take the carbs off to get to the oil pressure switch and to thread the loom down the left hand side of the bike.

Take loads of pics as you are unwinding the old loom and the new one will be easy.

use the opportunity to have a good clean of the bike and the existing plugs.

So i spent a couple of hours last night stripping the rear of the bike and removing the tank so i could pull though the loom to access the damaged wires. This morning on closer inspection the the worst of the damaged wires were the 3 yellow wires coming from the alt going to the rec/reg.

The plan is to use another old loom to replace the damaged part (keeping the wiring colours the same).

Because the 3 wires coming from the alt are the same colour how do i check which one is which? +,- from the alt etc.

Because it was this wires that had shorted and broke i need to know which way round they go.

would starting the bike and switching the lights on and seeing if they dim when revv'd and turning off and swapping the wires around until the lights dont dim damage anything?

I know i have explained it long winded but just want to make sure everything is connected up correctly.
