fzr 3tj1 reg-rec issue
hello people
not been on too much in the past couple of months, been building the 9 which is now on the road
so i have had some time today to sort out the fzr, it's been giving me a bit of gyp for neglecting it
i initially thought it was the battery, as it wouldn't hold a charge for more than 24 hrs, but on investigation it appears the reg-rec is toast, i'm getting up to 30V out of it, when revved up, so presuming it's had it and probably the battery too now,
question is i have an R6 reg-rec which came with the bike, i know this is a decent upgrade but i could never get it going, (so when i got a new loom with the reg-rec connected i just used that (it was the smaller standard jobbie))
so how is it connected to the fzr loom as it has an extra black wire, which on mine was taped up and wedged between the reg-rec and frame, and didn't work,
when i connected the black to earth/the frame it just blew fuses
don't have the R6 wiring diagram so any help would be appreciated

Re: fzr 3tj1 reg-rec issue
Just fit a 3tj one then.
The problem with reg recs are that they can cause the wiring to heat up which can change their resistance. That can fry the alternator too.
You need to get the whole lot checked out. If youre in London ive got a diagnostic tool.

Re: fzr 3tj1 reg-rec issue
Hi, i had a feeling that the extra wire is an ignition on +12volt wire, some reg/recs have this, tho i've never figured out why really. maybe worth a try.
Cheers

Have you tried googling r6 reg wiring see wat pops up?

that's the planEvilchicken0 wrote:Just fit a 3tj one then.

thanks for the offer borris but i'm a bit of a way from you, i do have a tester though that will tell me the ohm reading for the genny but i think the problem is the reg-rec, had a quick look today and it smells like fish, so a dead un me thinksEvilchicken0 wrote:If youre in London ive got a diagnostic tool.
yep found the workshop manual for an r6 with the same reg-rec and it appears the black wire does go to ground unless i'm reading it all wrongMorespeedvicar wrote:Hi, i had a feeling that the extra wire is an ignition on +12volt wire, some reg/recs have this, tho i've never figured out why really. maybe worth a try.

Have a squint through the enclosed link; it's longwinded but there is a pic and instructions for the 5 pin R/r.
It is the 6 pin ones that utilise the top middle pin as a ignition on/live feed for auxillaries.

Yeah looks like an earth, strange why it was blowing fuses with it connected to ground tho. Its not like the r6 regs i've seen, they all have the loom socket on the reg/rec not with a seperate wire inbetween.

scratch all that, assumption being the mother of all cock-ups, i amused it was an R6 article but the likelihood is that it aint,Morespeedvicar wrote:Yeah looks like an earth, strange why it was blowing fuses with it connected to ground tho. looking at the link to fzronline it shows the red as + and the black as - but the black on mine is positive at the battery voltage which is why it blew fuses, with this wire taped up as it was originally it don't work at all, so i guess this was one of the issues the previous owner had with the bike, i just put a new loom on which had a standard reg-rec attached,
also while i was at it, i checked out the genny, and all is good there so i'll just have to get a standard 3tj reg-rec.
cheers for the input chaps
ps: a paper weight is about all it's good for boris
