Regulator Rectifier identification help!

Hi guys, I have myself an NC30, and after getting it going great with a new battery, a short ride soon sees a reluctance to rev, intermittently cutting out, and a lack of a starter motor.... which seem to be saying it's a battery issue. (Just to confirm, I rode it with the new battery freshly put in and it was beautiful to ride, everything worked and worked well, and there was plenty of power right through the revs)

So I think my regulator is away.
However, looking at the subframe shows this monstrosity, which I don't think is quite right. ..Or is it?





I would ideally like to replace the unit but if you look closely at the second photo you can see that the wiring connections are bullet connectors, and not done by a two or three piece plug as suggested by photos of the reg/rec on eBay and the like.
Can anybody shed some light on this subject? I'm not very electronically minded to say the least :)

Although not OEM it may still be functional. First test is to measure the battery voltage with the engine running, should be minimum 14volts and a maximum of 15 volts at 5000rpm with lights on high beam. If not then either the rect/reg or stator is faulty.

That is a very good point. I brought a multimeter home today and the voltage whilst:
Off - 12.6
running at 4000 - 12 and slowly decreasing
running at 1500 - extreme fluctuation of multimeter reading, anywhere from 8 to 11 volts.

I also tested to see if there was a current drain anywhere but it seems not.
So back to my original question. What rectifier could this be? Should I just replace it or bite the bullet and buy the appropriate oem part and also the connector plug for it?

You need to test the stator next.

Disconnect rect/reg three yellow wires, set multimeter to 200 ohms, connect multimeter probes to each pair of yellow wires in turn and measure the resistance. Should be 1-2 ohms.

Then set multimeter to 20M (or highest resistance range), place one probe on chassis earth point (or battery -ve terminal) and the other on each yellow wire in turn, resistance reading should be infinity, blank display on multimeter.

Between each yellow lead and the frame earth point I get a reading of 1.9M ohms. As opposed to infinity!

Not a good sign, but to test that the multimeter can measure infinity, do not connect the probes to any wires. Do you now get a reading of infinity?

What were the resistance readings between pairs of yellow wires.

The meter reads blank then reads 1.9 when connected so I think it can, when I connect the wires to each other through the probes I struggle to get any sort of reading at all....

Just to confirm, when you connect one probe to one yellow wire and the other probe to another yellow wire, you do not get a reading? Try setting the multimeter on a higher resistance range.

Yeah that's it.

I'll have to wait until I'm home again, the bike is left there! I'll let you know and try to get a better reading this evening. But it wasn't even changing at all, no reading.
I was initially hoping it wasn't the rectifier but doing the stator requires flywheel pullers and also a lot of money to replace. Does anyone know if a cbr400 stator will fit?

Have you checked the plug on the right side of the frame near the v of the engine that the genny wires go through? I wouldnt worry about the stator unit you know its dead. Try metering them from there.
