Can you ride on the day your MOT expires!!??

Hi guys,

Really silly question, my MOT expires on Wednesday, I haven't booked it in anywhere as it's the first time ill be road testing it since I've done some work on it, so I want to make sure she's all fine for it. What I want to know is......is can I ride it Wednesday even though the MOT expires Wednesday? i.e does it run out Wednesday night at midnight?

If anyone could get back to me asap, I would be very grateful

I am not sure but assume it would be.

You can make sure your ok by booking it in for MOT....as you are allowed to ride the bike to the mot station aren't you

I can't remember if they are timed as well as dated. It'll say so on the cert. If it's not timed, if the MOT expires Weds it will surely mean you can ride until midnight. Yes, you can ride to the MOT place as long as the test is booked and you ride directly there. If it fails, you can ride directly home, or directly to a place to have the bike repaired (with the same proviso as the test), and then back to the tester. Insurance companies sometimes state that your bike isn't insured without a valid MOT however, so don't bin it just in case. That said, expiry or MOT failure does not invalidate your third party insurance, so if you prang someone else, their stuff is still covered but you might have a job persuading the insurer to pay out to fix your bike. Also, if you fail with something truly serious you could potentially be busted for riding a dangerously unroadworthy bike even if it is only to somewhere for fixing on the same day. It's a bloody minefield, which I'm currently dealing with because the missus took our car to a stupid garage and came back with tons of unfair fails and advisories as they always do, meaning it would be dodgy ground to take it back to Sussex and have it tested by our neighbour. Instead, today it is at a different local garage (who refuted all bar two of the fails and advisories of the other place) having their own small list of defects attended to. You can MOT up to a month before expiry and keep the original expiry date. However, while technically a fail doesn't invalidate a previous pass, you would have a hard time persuading plod it was sensible to be driving about on a vehicle with fails on it for any length of time if you couldn't prove you'd had them fixed. Often, the insurers and police contradict each other on the facts, which is very confusing. The above is my take, and who knows, some of that might be duff advice I've been given too!
