Exhaust still doesn't line up right!!??

Post by Cal Walker »

Right guys I'm pulling my hair out about this one now,

I posted and thread up a couple of weeks ago ("Exhaust doesn't seem to line up right!!??") saying that my exhaust wasn't sitting parallel to the underside of my seat unit by it angling up to much, so I cant get a standard indicator in. The bike has been down on her side from the previous owners so I sourced a straight subframe, as other members thought it may be the subframe bent.

Just been out in the garage to fit it, got it lined up and but the bolts in and straight away I still can see its doing the same!!??

The only thing I can think of now: Is the rear manifold bent?

If anyone can get back to me I would be very gratefull.........HELP!!!

I'm not quite following whats lined up or whats not (maybe post a photo) but are you sure the exhaust / collector isn't the thing that is bent? (ie subframe and manifold is fine) or are you sure that the exhaust you have goes with this bike? I really doubt that the manifold is bent (the rear manifold is quite a solid casting).

You may have an aftermarket exhaust which kicks up higher at the rear? (possibly a different size or cut down hanger too)

Pictures as requested:

The exhaust hanger wont line up with the bracket, nor will the thread on the back of the pillion footrest go through the mounting lug

From the back you can see theres no room for as standard indicator to fit in there

Its a standard full system that hasn't been bent at all, any ideas why it wont line up still????

loosen it off at the manifold, bolt it up at the hanger/pegs and then tighten the manifold..

what goes on near the linkage? Looks like a clamp?

Looks like maybe this bike,Or exhaust has been shunted up the rear,
Get someone to hold the bike, then push down on the exhaust It will bend back,
They are pretty flexible when not attached at the rear.

Where abouts are you looking buddy? you mean where the gear linkage normally goes? Around there?

And in terms of the bike being shunted up the rear, the old system that I took off sat the same, so theirs no way they could both sit exactly the same due to damage is there?

The only thing that I haven't touched on the exhaust is the rear manifold, don't know if this has been bent from before and is stopping my standard system from sitting/lining up in the correct place?

Really just want this all sorted

if you look right from the picture of the bike - where the side stand is.

The rear stubby is a bloody tough but of kit - get it out and reseat it if you want..but it is ballache.

I reckon you can line it up by loosening the bolts and going from there.

It's a solid standard exhaust, the only clamps there are on it is the 2 that are on the collectors underneath the bike, but I shall go into the garage in the morning and undo the 3 nuts on the manifold and see if she wants to go on then, just a bit worried as I don't want to start forcing things to fit!!!
