Engine locked :-(
hi, i think my engine is locked. Crankshaft turns 3 or 4 times then stops/jams. Can be reversed the same number. Can someone please tell if the engine is locked? Or is this normal?

Have you tried with the spark plugs removed?

quite odd
2 turns of the crank equals 1 turn of the cam shaft which means the engine has completely turned over
so to me that means motor is ok
i would prob pull the side cover and start looking aroud the clutch area

My guess (and it is a guess) is that something has a broken tooth (or teeth) on it - its turning until it gets to the missing teeth and it then fouls (maybe the cam gears?)

thanks for help, just to add the bike is 1993, ive not had it long, its been standing along time, 13 years!
ive not had it running, the starter motor turned engine over fine to start with. Then there was a metallic 'click' and the starter would not turn over any more.
Ive taken starter out and it works fine, the relay is fine too.
Hows best to investigate this?

I would start with the cam covers if possible (cos you don't have to drain the oil) and see if all looks happy there, then the left side cover is a good plan

ive removed left alternator cover/case, theres no teeth missing and everything seems fine.
Crank turns 3/4 of 1 full turn so engine is not turning over fully.
Removed rocker cover, seems clean and ok.
How difficult is it to remove head? Anyone done this?

As said earlier...take out the plugs and try again. After sitting so long perhaps you are getting some hydro lock...

i think ive found the problem, the cam chain has slipped. due to the tensioner having no oil. A mechanic said it was a common problem for the superfour.
Happen to anyone else?
Im going to re-set the timing or try too. :-)

Never heard of that problem before, Remove all plugs and the hexagon plug on the right side opf the engine to expose the timing mark and set number one cylinder (left hand cylinder) on its firing stroke (ie all valves No1 cylinder at approximate 10 to 2 ) the cam cogs have a mark on them that should be placed level with the top of the head where the cambox cover sits its easy enough to do .hoppy41 wrote:i think ive found the problem, the cam chain has slipped. due to the tensioner having no oil. There is a small bolt (10mm) that fits on top of the cam chain tensioner that must be removed in order to insert a small screw driver to release the tension on the chain,.
Horrible thought, if the engine was turning when the chain slipped/jumped you may have serious problems with a holed piston and or bent valves.
